    Steve, re watering:

We bury a plastic cup, with a small hole in the bottom, in each basket just leaving the top about half an inch above the soil level. Then we just have to fill the cup with water each time and give the surface just a light watering. This gets the water to the roots and saves having the soil washing over the edges if you put too much water on the basket. It also saves a lot of time. :gnthb:

We also sometimes line the baskets with moss raked up from the garden. It is very similar to sphagnum moss and works well. We have one area where you sink up to your ankles in it. One year I raked out 20 sacks of it to take to the gardening club and it all went in about 5 minutes :).

Oooh I have noticed the soil going a bit crusty on top of my baskets so will have them down today and get scraping.

Can you over water a hanging basket?? I saw somewhere a suggestion of sitting the basket in a bowl with some water in the bottom so that the roots could soak up some water. Is that a good idea or complete rubbish??? I think my baskets have dried out a bit even though I soak the sides and water on top.

It's often a good idea to put an old desert bowl in the bottom of the basket. Then when you water it this collects the water and holds it for a day. It's almost like having the self watering/reservoir types.

You can only really do this if you're top planting the basket rather than side planting though.

Have you seen the Spherical hanging baskets?

A very topical thead for me... I have just planted up two wall mounted baskets this morning.
These are new and are a bit different.
Check the picture and you will see a removable grill where the plant roots are. This is removable and allows the young plant to be installed without any root damage. (No quashing and squezzing to get them into the hole in conventional lined baskets.)

Theres a water reservior at the bottom as well.
Planted up this morning with two layers of water gel retention cyrstals and some slow release feed.
They mounted on a West facing wall so hopefully should not suffer to much from the afternoon sun.
Yesterday I planted up two of the round hanging on chains of the same design.
I hope this sytem gives us a really grand showng this summer

    Sorry i missed this

I used Tumbling Toms and trailing Strawberries, This year ive planted ordinary strawberries as i think theyll trail further than the trailing strawberries :p I also add water retaining gel, food pellets and "Allways" shove a couple of French Marigolds in to deter the greenfly..

ps, both the strawbs & toms are flowering now :yho:
