Hi, we have a rose bush in the front garden that grows red roses but when i pruned it before christmas (not sure if thats the right time) I noticed some long thin growths with lots of spikes on along the ground like wild rose branches as though they were growing from the bush just under the ground or at ground level, not like strong branches that grow further up the bush. Does this mean my rose bush is turning wild. Is there somethiing I can do to stop these horrible offshoots?
    Thank you for any suggestions

Sounds like you have a bunch of 'suckers' - these tend to grow from the base of the plant and do not bear flowers. Best thing to do is to pull them off or if that's not possible, cut them off as close to the plant as possible. You can do that as sson as you like Tricia. if not then the plant will grow without flowers on these suckers.........

Barnaby is spot on with his advice, Tricia:thumbsup::D The only other thing it might be is a bramble that has seeded or rooted near your main rose and is extending it's range. The only reason I put forward that theory is that suckers usually, and I do stress usually:heehee:, grow upwards, whereas your description mentions the "suckers" growing along the ground. Your main rose will not do that as it's root stock will not be from Brambles.:D Brambles are hard to get rid of or keep under control as they are so rampant. I would follow Barnaby's advice to keep the suckers under control.:D
