What a sad sad story but with a terrific ending, will never understand people that dont look afther animals, its soo cruel, but Aramis is happy and wow what a difference in his appearance.
Are you going to do like a diary of Aramis onm here and let us know how he gets on?
I love horses, horse rider myself and it makes me cry to look at his first appearance, then i look at the last pic and makes me smile.

On behalf of Jill, thank you Pete, Sis, Winnie, Axie-Ali and scorpio. Jill has done a truly amazing job with Aramis.

Now, even more of a surprise ...

On Wednesday Jill rode Aramis over to a riding school and it was suggested she enter him in a couple of events. Jill was rather hesitant but agreed.

    Aramis won three medals ...
1st in Best All Round Horse or Pony which was an individual display which included a jump.
2nd for Best Veteran based on the condition of the horse.
And a medal for a clear round over poles.

Here he is shyly displaying his medals ...

And here he is with a very proud Jill and her two latest rescue dogs, Jake in the foreground and Ella to the left ...

Who would have thought it was just four months ago he was rescued from the gypsies ....

Does anyone have a guess how old he may be, he looks so much better.

I suppose his history will never be known.

That looks a nice place that Jill has there.:)

      Thanks Penny and Pete.

Pete, they think he's about 19-20 by his teeth and whatever else they go by. There's about 8 hectares ... but although it's only 20 minutes north of us, it's a bit arid for me in the summertime. There is a stream on the property.

20? is that fairly old for a horse, or kind of middle aged?

Wow, Victoria! As has been said I had tears firstly and then big smiles at the end. What a great ending and how good you must feel to have been his (Aramis') heroine! And you've made a new friend too. Fantastic. Well done all!

      cheers

What a lovely story Victoria and so glad that Jill has given Aramis a lovely forever home.:thmb:It would be no good me going over to your country as I would be wanting to terminate the life of everyone that ill treated their pets plus I would be trying to rescue all of them:D

He does look good with his rosettes though:gnthb:

Hi Victoria, I have passed a horse going to Faro Airport in the last 2 weeks and have been very concerned, seems to be tethered on a short rope no food or water, barely any flesh on this horse. I have passed this morning (20/08/12) on my way to Faro Airport to come home from a 3 week holiday on the Algarve. The horse is (I think) just before/or after the Tunnel Sobral on the Motorway. Can you give me a website who to contact or can you help? I feel so sorry for the horse. Best regards Val

Hello Val. I know the area of which you speak. Every so often you see such a sight, as was the case with Aramis.

The GNR (National Police) are in charge of animal abuse.
        http://www.gnr.pt/default.asp?do=5r20n/DM.p105ryu15/p105ryu15

Sadly, horses (along with dogs and cats) are 'possessions' here and there are currently no laws to stop abuse by the owner. I have heard of incidents where the GNR have visited the gypsy camps or private land to investigate cases. In the case of Aramis, my friend purchased him off the gypsies for around €5-600. We do not have an RSPCA equivalent here and the animal charities mainly deal with abandoned/abused dogs and cats and one or two with donkeys.

So I'm afraid there is not much I can do and my friend now has three such horses which is about all she can cope with.

        Thank you for your concern.
