Isn't it still like that? I have one or two mates in various trades. If I need anything, its usually just a couple of phone calls away. Sometimes I phone one of my mates just for advice about how to proceed with a bit of DIY project. Next thing I know, someone is round the house, or I'm being invited to my mates yard, or sometimes things will go quiet for a while and I'll have pretty much wrote an idea off, then suddenly I'll get a call that goes along the lines of 'are you still after an XYZ? cos I've found one'.

When I was building my patio, I realised I didn't have enough foundation material. I phoned one of my builder mates (always coming by all sorts of rubbish). A few days later I was arriving home from work, pulling onto the drive, and my first angry thought was 'who's dumped tonnes of sacks of rubbish on my drive?'. Then I remembered I'd told my mate I needed some hardcore. The wife is used to it. She often sees stuff just being dumped on the drive by scruffy men in dilapidated white vans while I'm at work, and just concludes its something I've been after.

Unbeknown to us, next door's stopcock had been leaking for years. It is under the floor by their front door, very near to the internal wall which we share with them. We kept smelling damp in our hall. Then, the wall started to grow fur and smell funny. Hopefully we'e solved the problem now but I think it's going to take ages for the wall to dry out. :( Hope you get it fixed, Watergarden.

I've been in my place 40 years so, like clueless, I've been able to build up a large group of friends and acquaintances who, between them, have either the skills or the things that I need. :dbgrtmb:

Of course, I've had well over half a century to get to this stage  and now they're starting to pop their clogs! :(

Yes, bring back the good of days of Sunday car boots in supermarket car parks and somewhere for learner drivers to practice parking without my car next to them.

        All done.
But why do simple but time consuming jobs always take longer than they should.
Couldn't quite get to old stopcock, had to cut back of cupboard out. Can't easily do that cupboard door in the way, take door off, shelf now in the way, shelf got more stuff on it than it looks, moved stuff from shelf, took shelf out, cut back of cupboard out, turn mains water off outside, tap stiff to turn, eventually get water off, take old stopcock outfit new one, turn water on (tap still stiff) slight leak from main incoming pipe connection, up to diy superstore to get more stuff, get long tap key for outside too, turn water off again, try to undo main pipe connection, spanner wont fit, wall in the way, get "electric chisel" to make wider gap, chisel wont fit gap too tight, get drill drill lots of holes in side of cupboard (like perforations) take out new "access panel" side of cupboard comes off, (almost rotten with water damage) make bigger space with chisel for spanner, undo nut (spanner now fits) make up new pipe fit new pipe, tighten nut, go outside turn water on again, tiny leak, go outside turn water off, undo main nut all looks ok, search internet, suggests PTFE tape on olive, put PTFE tape on olive, re-assemble pipe, tighten nut, go outside turn water back on, no leak, but cupboard full of mess, and side hanging off, make wooden bracket to pull side in, fix new bracket, clean shelf, refit door, put stuff back on shelf, tidy up mess, put tools away, shut cupboard door make coffee, type on forum...................................
