Was having a clear out recently and amazed how quickly things disappeared. Even stuff I thought people wouldn't be interested in.

Has anyone picked up anything interesting from freecycle. I've yet to pick anything up and was wondering if anyone could offer any tips on how to do this successfully. I mean can posting wanted ads be successful?

Wanted ads are much more effective as you are not competing with everyone else.

I got a Dishwasher for my Sis within 24 hours of posting a wanted.

I've had all sorts of stuff from freecycle, freezer, heater, dustbins, food, a wok, stepladders.

I was unaware of Freecycle, until googled recently and then spoke to my adult daughters
The youngest one was doing Crimbo dinner for OH parents, and was worried about serving it hot
ON Free cyclye she asked if anyone could loan her a heater thing, within an hour she not only had a loan but given a brand new HOSTESS HEATED TROLLEY, an unwanted gift from a game show

Both daughters have been using it both giving and receiving mainly kids garden toys, swings, sandpits, climbing frames, trampolines

Just the past day or two I have actually signed up, and asked for a caravan calour gas heater (very small) the plan to use in the greenhouse, no response :-(

Probably a bit too specific Jack, not many people will be dismantling a caravan.

Leave it a few days and put a wanted for a gas heater/greenhouse heater.

As well as Freecycle you should check on Freegle too (which I think is a break away group from Freecycle). Both are very active in my local area.

I managed to get enough roof tiles to finish off my extension. They match my existing roof and were advertised on Freecycle as "200 tiles", well there were actually 500 when I picked them up. At the reclaim yard they are nearly £1 each.

I've often looked at the wanted adverts before posting up offers, but people never respond apart from one guy a week later after I'd advertise my old garden chairs which were snapped up within 1/2 an hour.

I find it a great way of get rid of unwanted items (junk) that I'd would otherwise have to drive to the dump.

I'm looking to gather up some random paving slabs for my pathway. I figured there must be people on freecycle who have one or two knocking around.

Posted a wanted ad 24 hours ago and no replies yet. :(

How long does it usually take to get a response from a wanted ad in past experiences?

some people like me get a daily digest and other ( like my daughter gets a weekly one) so it can depend on howoften they check the mail

in the past i have read wanted adds and not thought any thing of it, then a few days later have come across what they had asked for in the garage or attic and go back and reply so i would give it a while before you post again, on my local site they ask you not to request the same thing more than once a month so check with yours :dbgrtmb:

also keep an eye open for any one redoing the garden espec' with skip out side i have been cheeky enought to pop a note through letter box with a polite beg with contact no .. some times no response but a few times i have had a call and got what i needed for free !! :yess:

I find it good for getting rid of stuff (especially surplus plants) but hopeless for acquiring it.

We use it a lot, both for getting rid of stuff and getting useful things too; we've managed to acquire no end of plants for the garden, some quite unusual stuff too, plenty of wood to use in the garden, even rotted horse manure. We've also got sets of drawers, tables and a small chest freezer that was like new for the house.

Convinced my Aunt to join up a few months back and within weeks she's got a iron double bed base, solid pine doors, wardrobes, gates and all sorts of normally expensive items for her son's new house .......they've even got a trailer for the car to tow it all in :D, it just needed a new wheel :thumb:

That's a brilliant idea. I've taken stuff from skips before but never paving slabs. Other half had a go at me for walking up someones drive and having a look in their trailer full of junk, saying it was trespassing into their garden. I would never walk into someones garden but this drive had it's garden gated off.

In a way you're doing them a favour by making their skip/trailer emptier so most people, if asked politely, are likely to say yes. If the skip's on the street I think it's fair game.
