Any one run the newest version of AVG. It contains a one off Computer scan. I ran it and it came up with a list of 'errors'. However it does not seem to fix any of them (except perhaps if one pays). So if these 'errors' actually exist, what is the best way to remove them. Idiots guise please.

Every free scan I've tried also comes up with lots of errors Pal.

I usually ignore them, going on the principle that, "if it aint broke dont fix it".

But then I dont know much on the subject.:)

Hi, the "errors" really do exist, but they can be things like, you have removed a short cut icon, but the information is still there.

Using the example above, its nothing to worry about, but it is an "error" as pete said, if you run any "error detecting programme" it will always find errors, as they want you to spend money on buying their product to remove the errors.

Yes some errors can slow your computer, and ideally yes you should "clean it" around once a week. If you have a windows operating system they have a built in basic cleaner, have a look at the Microsoft website for info. click me

You can also get this one for free

I use CCleaner on a regular basis. I was put onto it a couple of years ago by a friend who is his company's senior IT manager. I reckoned that if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me! However, I got a new lappy recently and kind of got out of the habit until I realised it was running slower and slower. I did a cclean and it pulled out 119,000MB of stuff! Ran ever so much better after that! :heehee:

btw, did you know that CCleaner was originally called c**p cleaner but they had complaints so sanitized it!

      Thanks folks!
Already do all the Microsoft recommended stuff and the last time I used CCleaner it messed the machine up so badly I had to do a System restore, so a bit wary about using it.

I use AVG (2012 free version), CC cleaner (the free version that was recommended here a few wekks ago), and malwarebytes (the free version)

the combination of all 3 seem to work very well

Hi Palustris, I changed from AVG to Avast a few years ago as I kept experiencing compatibility problems.. Avast is free too & a little more superior in my mind..
avast! Free Antivirus - Download Software for Virus Protection

I also use spybot & malwarebytes as well & always use firefox not IE & all that works for me...

Not having a problem with Virus or unwanted Cookies, I have a good working suite of protection and so far they have kept us clean. the 'errors' found by AVG were probably bits of deleted programs etc. I just wondered if anyone else had tried the AVG scan.

That was another reason for changing to Avast.. I don't seem to have things like that any more Pal & it just annoyed me I think... :D

        Same here... Avast

        Onto the main topic...

Palustris,I'm maybe wrong but I suspect you might have a fake anti-virus since you have to pay to remove errors :nono: (See more here: Encyclopedia entry: AVGAntivirus2011 - Learn more about malware - Microsoft Malware Protection Center ). Usually the free AVG is pretty good.

Please run the following online scanner from Bitdefender just to make sure:

If you have the Win 7 installed onto your PC, then I would use the security essentials it has preinstalled on it.
No errors or issues thus far.
Or have I spoken to soon:whistle:

MSE works extremely well and is as good as the best of them out there. I like the fact that it isn't a resource hog and that it works quietly and efficiently in the background without all the usual nags and notifications.

Ran the usual scans by MSE, AVG.Spybot and no infections found. Ran Ccleaner which 'fixed' the Registry problems it found, but with no significant speed up of anything.
Also have Scotty on the machine which prevents any unauthorised changes to the machine.
