Is it okay to cut back overgrown willow 'shoots' at this time of year ?

Its a willow arbour which has been a tad neglected and the shoots are too tough to be woven back into the structure.

No problem, perfect time to do it now.

If you have a fair few cuttings don't forget to make some nice baskets/hurdles. I always have a stab at making something when I cut willow, usually baskets. Which usually end up looking like turtles :D

I'd love to see a pic of your willow arbour. Living willow structures is something I'm trying to get into. I've made a dome play house in my garden, which seems to be doing ok. Its not very neat, but not bad for a first attempt.

This is the one I grew in our last garden. I'd cut some vertical shoots from a Kilmarnock Willow and chucked them on the compost heap. Then I thoguth better of it, stuck them in the ground and, Hey Presto, within a few months, a willow arch!:lolpoint:
