I have used Kendalls a few times, never had a problem with them.

Sorry, can't help. The problem with online reviews is that you only tend to get the bad reports and not the good ones.

I'm guessing it depends what size, what you need to move and how far you need to travel.

We've hired a van 3 times; the first time (when we moved ourselves) we had a Luton box van with a tail-lift, it was, at the time, the largest van you could drive on an 'ordinary' driving licence, and that we hired from a local firm on recommendation (from a friend or neighbour - can't now remember which), but we had to fetch and return it ourselves which was no problem because we only moved 5 miles.

We had a smaller one from Nationwide Hire UK, when we moved some 'stuff' oop-north for our eldest daughter, mainly because you could pick it up in one location and 'deposit it' at another. I believe you can also have delivery and collection - at a price of course.

The last time we used Europcar, we only needed it for a short time and they allow you to hire by the hour rather than most of the others which were a set fee for a day, (whether you actually needed the van for that long or not). It may be the same with other firms, I don't know, but I do recall this firm also offer a 24hour roadside assistance should 'anything unfortunate' happen.

They all came with unlimited mileage, so far as I recall they all came with a full tank of diesel and although the van hired locally wasn't the cleanest thing, outside or in, we swept it out and since we weren't putting our furniture on the outside we it didn't really matter. The two we've had subsequently however, were pristine both inside and out.

I can recommend PRACTICAL van hire, if there's one near you. I've used our local one several times and they've always been good.
