I'm building a shed on my allotment, and i was thinking it would look well cool to do this (err dont you think) anyone done this before and any advice on how to do it, any help would be great as I haven't got a clue how its done, at a guess I think I would have to put some membrane down on the wood, then chicken wire, and support is along the way with strips of batten so it can "grip" but that's just off the top of my head, or am I off my rocker???

We had this thread before and we still waiting for the moss to grow , as you try to grow in the allotment shed will simply not work well as the moss need shadow to grow ,the sunshine will kill it in half day , but it not impossible as it grow on many roof trough autumn and die down ...... what about a semprevivum roof? will look even more impressive and they are indistructible plants , will survive hot and heavy frost .

Thanks for the advice, as long as its green and looks good, I really dont mind what kind of thing I put up there on the roof, if that's a pic of yours it looks spectacular, and I will definitely have a bash at that, what did you put under it to make it stay there and let it grow??? are there the ones you have?? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260796284131 as they look different from the ones on your roof

Hi Dopey , No that`s not mine , I`ve seen a roof like that and that`s why I was suggesting to you , i`ve got lots of semprevivum in my garden and trust me they are growing everywhere and resist to really cold temperature ....I would suggest to buy plants raden then seeds , they multiply very quick and you can get in many different colors as well , at the same time you can use many other succulent plant like sedum or alpine, what you need on the roof is just a membrane to stop the water to get inside an a way to block grit and compost on the roof .

Every garden center will have alpine plants , but they can be really expencive, try to ask friend for cutting , succulent plants are really easy to root , market , ebay or even charity shop .

Joe Swift on GW had a season long project to grow alpines and succulents and the like as a Shed Roof garden. That worked OK and he showed how to do it step by step.

Do that then throw as much moss on the roof as you can get your hands on and tuck it under the chicken wire to hold it down. Mix up some natural yogurt and water in a sprayer and spray the whole roof and it should take off.

Keeping it moist maybe a problem though.

I have had a close look at this, as I was asked to quote for a green roof

they use sedum .... it is not cheap ... I never bothered with quoting, as it is not my field and I'm scared of heights

          check this:
          http://www.sedumgreenroof.co.uk/?gclid=CJ_8xNjq5q4CFQINfAod53B9iQ

there is lots on youtube (search for green roof sedum)

well i got some rabbit wire and compost sand, and heavy duty black liner, chosen a few sedum plans and seeds, and as I build the shed, I will prep the roof before I put it on (building my own shed) out of wood that's been thrown out, or just not used any more from the site I'm working on now..... people put stuff aside for me too, was thinking of a football net as well, dont know where I'm going to blag that from though!!

Dopey sedum and semprevivum will grow on everything , I`ve got a semprevivum on my roof , basicaly just survive with the raining water and air dump , so why don`t you try to get as much moss as you can , you can even buy dry moss from garden center and tide that up with a football net ......you will maybe lucky and have both moss and sedum or just make a flat roof and will be just easy.
