    Hi

Last year we purchased some patio roses, oriental lillis and a rose tree. I am aware I need to prune the patio roses but what do I do with the oriental lillies and the rose tree?

    Thanks

Hi NGF, firstly you don't need to prune the "Patio Roses" too hard, just give them a light prune to keep the shape. Secondly, by "Tree Rose" do you mean a Standard Rose i.e.: one with a tall single stem rising to the "ball" of roses, and where are your Oriental Lilies, in a container, or in the ground:scratch::biggrin:

You don't need to do anything to the lillies aside from watch them come up and then watch out for the crimson scurge that is lily beetle. An early feed may help a little but they are pretty self sustaining

    Thanks

Yes it is a single stem rising to a ball.

The lillies are in a container and look just like dead sticks. Is this normal?

So I just pull them out of the container? How will they grow back then though?

    No no stop
Wait for advise from the others
I just pulled on mine and the whole centre stalk came out, it left me with a sort of Garlic bulb but about 4" round with a big hole in the centre,
(this was in OCTOBER) I have not seen any growth since
So maybe you are just to cut it down at the base, DO NOT PULL IT OUT
    until advised otherwise

I bought three identical potted lilies last year. I wasn't sure what to do with them over the winter so one pot went into the greenhouse, under a bench and ignored for the winter, one was left outside in a bubble-wrap wrapping and the third stayed outside with just a plastic cloche over the pot. None were touched or watered. The greenhouse one threw a shoot about two weeks ago, I looked under the cloche at the weekend and found that that too had a shoot, so I unwrapped the bubble wrap and guess what - a shoot. So it seems to me neglect is the thing. Of course this winter hasn't had the deep freezes of previous years. I have had lilies outdoors in the garden which lasted for several years, I think I lost them after a very wet winter so maybe too much water is the enemy?

Good luck, by the way, my roses are all growing nicely and I just gave them a little "tidying up" prune last weekend, so with these three types of plant I've found them very easy and no work between seasons.

Just cut the dead stems. as Jack say don't pull them off, of the Lilies down and I would gently take the Lilies out of the pots, renew the compost, and repot the Liles. I advise the new compost because it's quite likely that you'll find some grubs and the like in the old compost that shouldn't be there. When you see the first buds start feeding with Tomato Feed once a week and you should get a good show.

Your standard rose just need clipping into the shape you want, taking off any stems or shoots coming out from the base or stem that appear. And just like the Lilies the Standard Rose would like a feed a week!!:snork:
