My mother was very superstitious, especially at (Hogmanay).
Our 'First Footer',had to be Tall and Dark Haired, He or She should have a lump of Coal and a Bottle of Whisky and something to eat with them..
If My Dad was late back from his mates house ,he had to stand in the garden shed and wait till we had our 'First Foot'.:cry3:.

My Dad was small, Bald, Had Drank All The Whisky, and was Looking For Something To Eat ,(He Was Barred):wallbanging:.

I used to be very superstitious but I gave it up because it was too much like hard work.

Years ago I had a lucky charm. It was a necklace that I'd made myself. I told people for a laugh that it had 'powers', and I guess if you say something enough it becomes truth. It had the power to reverse my luck (only trivial stuff), so if I'd been having a bad run on the weekly 2p poker games with my mates, I'd wear my necklace, and then I'd win. If I was having no luck with the ladies, I'd wear my necklace, and suddenly I'd have a run of success. It got too much for me though. I had to be so careful about when to wear it, because if I was having moderately ok luck, it could turn things very sour. So I decided one day to dispose of it. After much careful thought (in a nightclub pre the smoking ban), I took it off and held it in my hand as I saw the ash tray emptying man coming along with his bin bag. I waited until he was nearly at my table before dropping my necklace in the ashtray. I watched it go into the bin bag, and I watched the man walk off continuing his rounds. Several days later I was returning home from clubbing in the early hours of one morning and I noticed something shiny on my doorstep, some 12 miles from the club where I'd saw my necklace go in the bin. I looked closely. It was my necklace. It had come home. I took this as an omen so decided to keep it. It took pride of place in my bedroom after that for several days, until I met the lass that later became my wife. The first time she called to our house I decided to show her this magic necklace. It was gone. I searched my room, then later the entire house, and it just wasn't there. I've never seen it since.

If I were to list all the superstitions my Gran had, we'd all be here until doomsday, I didn't believe any of them .... touch wood.
