what i usually do is to acclimate the plants in the greenhouse first and then move outdoor mid May I usually do after the 17th , as 2 years ago we had last frost in my area that time .....better don`t risk , try not to keep the plant too warm indoor or will flower too early .

I'm new to Helenium this year, but I thought they were hardy, no?

I believe that they are indeed hardy, but are a little tender when young. I seem to recall being advised to treat Rudbeckia in much the same way.

they are hardy indeed , but it`s advisable not to put straigh away a plant bough from a shop straigh in your garden ....a temperature shock can kill even the hardyest of the plants , as we still having frost and the plant is maybe young , it`s advisable to acclimate it before.
many plants bough from shop like ikea , wilkinson , Homebase or whatever are keep at 24 c , with no water and artificial light , if not acclimate the plant will die .

Ah, good point. Plants from indoor-sheds will indeed have become tender.

(I buy from local garden centre, and they have hardy stuff outside)

Freddy's point about being tender when young is useful too, no harm in giving them an easier-ride in their first year so they grow strongly and get well established quickly :blue thumb:
