What to do in your garden right now..!

When the page opens you will have a calendar which you can look through then for every week through the year it gives you hints of what you should be doing for either of the following main areas.."Flowers", "Fruit & Veg", "Greenhouse" and "Around the garden" each area can then be clicked through to get more detailed info.

Experienced gardeners may not need this, but for gardeners of lesser knowledge like myself...its a useful planning aid and memory jog.

One of the best "calandar aids" is to take photographs through the seasons of the conrtents of your garden. I find this very helpful when moving stuff around in the dormant period. I find it difficult to remember the individual colours of things like azeleas.

 

I often thought about keeping a garden diary. Year upon year I catch myself wondering if my forsytha is late or it flowers at this time of year most of the time.

Does anyone keep a note of the jobs they do in the garden?

I started an unofficial A4 sheet that I keep in my RHS Encyclopedia of Garden Plants, but I wonder if it's worth going up a gear and do it properly?

 

I photograph everything in flower etc. in the garden every fortnight. I can look back to see when the Forsythia flowered last year. Doubt I would keep a diary of such things otherwise ...

I do keep a proper list of the vegetables - Sown, Germinated, Pricked out, Planted, First & Last harvest dates, and how many I grew, so that I can plan successional planting in future years.

 

I (try and always) do the same with everything from when seedlings germinate, planting out, flowering, cropping, whatever, etc., including blossom/fruits in the hedgrows and find it invaluable for comparison from year to year.

Always having a camera (Canon IXUS 100 IS) in my pocket helps and it's far quicker to point and shoot than take detailed notes.

 

I've always been a bit of a graphomaniac, so I think I'll go for the good old traditional garden diary. I plant and sow things every season and I probably weed out half of the stuff, because I never write down what I planted and where... But taking photos is a very good idea; Kirsten and Scrungee you'll be pleased to hear that I've started taking photos of the garden as well now.

I never imagined that you can take so much pleasure in gardening. It's funny, really, I grew up in a big city, never ever had a garden. In fact, all my family are city folk, nobody I'm related to ever had a garden. And here I am, an addict now!
