Asparagus question.

    I ve got some asparagus plants in pots in my greenhouse sown from seed last year. Some of them are sprouting spears. I dont understand this not only is it to early in the season but arn t they a year early.

    im no expert, but could it be the really cold snap followed by the slightly warmer weather we've had?

    You will have to be careful though, cold weather is on the way again

    No Mike they are not a year early, they do put up thin spears the Year after sowing, but the start into growth is a month or two early due to being in your greenhouse.
    Best to wait six or eight weeks and then plant them out into a prepared asparagus bed. I assume you know not to harvest for a couple of years in order to allow the crowns to develop.

    Thanks Dave Ive read to plant out in May is that too late and crop in the 3rd year right.

    That's right Mark, but in the first year of cropping don't take more than a couple of spears from each crown.
