If you are building an extension presumably you will be engaging an architect or a surveyor, both of whom will be able to identify the trees and give an opinion on the effects of the roots on the proposed building.

I think they are mostly oak then, they just didn't seem to have the standard looking leaves, but I've had a look in the wood and there are some acorns.

Hello Ash and welcome to the forum.

You don't give anything away here ... may I ask your location please? It would possibly help identify your trees.

Yes I agree with Silver Surfer the small tree in the middle is actually a Hazel and then the tree's behind that are most likely oak but I'd hope there'd be a mixture of different deciduous trees:WINK1:

Thats very interesting, there is some sort of nut on our lawn that looks like an acorn but without the helmets (not sure of the proper name). I will take some pictures of the leaves, bark, seeds? etc tomorrow maybe that will help.

Thanks for all your ideas so far, please check back in the morning when I've added some images.

Have a look at the links I add to help you.
Hazelnuts trees produce seeds that look like this.....

They are edible. Collect them in the autumn. Crack open the shell to eat the nut inside.
The ones on the ground now are probably empty inside or they would have been taken by squirrels, jays etc in the autumn.

Oak trees produce seeds called acorns that look like this...
