Hi everyone, been ages since I was last here, but spring has sprung and so has my garden :)

The eucalyptus tree which died last year, has been putting out shoots from the trunk low down near to the ground .... These have shot up (as Euclipts do !) and I need to get them off the old tree ... it is proving very difficult as they have no roots of their own, just coming out of the dead tree ... I have tried to use an axe and take off some of the tree with each new one, but very difficult - I do now have much strength and nor does my husband :( I wondered if there is an easier way to do this .... there are around 12-14 of these new shoots or whatever to call them, bigger than the old tree was when I bought it many years ago and are 4 feet tall !
I am adding some photos - well I hope I can do it - so will try now

Hi, is the old trunk still alive, it appears dead.

If so, you really need to saw it off lowdown.
do you want to keep any of the new shoots? or just select one to regrow.

Really you just need to cut back the growth you dont want with a saw, flush with the old trunk.
If you dont want it to regrow and would like to kill it off there are ways of doing it.

The old tree is dead - we used to give it a 'haircut' every year as they grow so quickly, but it got cut off too much a couple of autumns ago and is now dead .... yes, I would like to keep some of the new growth to plant elsewhere ... as I explained, we do not have the strength (age !) to either chop it down nor saw it down - so guess we will have to see if we can find someone to do it .... if I can manage to get the new growth off at the trunk they won't grow will they ?

    Hi Val
I'm newish to gardening, eucalyptus will regrow from the old strump and roots, if you want to replant some were else, then i think you will have to dig up the old tree strump and move it but i think it will not live, lots of eucalyptus died in the cold winter 2 winters ago, i had two died, and regrew but not the same, i cut tree up and dug out the roots and had to buy new ones

Well as I said - there are many new ones growing and over 4 foot tall - and yes I would like to keep some ... and over the many years we have had this tree, it has come through many bad winters, worse than the so called cold one a couple of years ago ... it died because it was cropped far too much .... I will phone age-concern later and see if they have anyone who does gardening jobs as there is no way we can dig up such a strong stump and roots

Further to my query .... I just wondered if it is possible to cut some of the upper part of the new shoots (which are around 4 feet tall now) and put them in water or something to see if they will grow roots and then I can plant them in a different part of my small garden ??

The trunk must still be alive and if you cannot get this out, you will have to cut off the new growths as they appear. However, they should look quite pretty. The shoots will not grow in water or soil. Do you know anyone who could try sawing it even lower?
