    Hi guys,

i am currently reading a book (the emporer wears no clothes).
It says in it that the entire reason Napoleon invaded Russia was to stop them from exporting hemp to England, as the british navy depended on huge amounts of hemp to build its ships. Napoleon apparantly figured if he could cut off the british hemp supplies from Russia he could defeat the British navy making way for an invasion. Apparantly Russia at first agreed to stop supply of hemp to the UK following threats of invasion from Napoleon but not before long the British sent boats from our overseas terorties like India, to Russia, on our behalf with supplies of gold and other valuables to trade for the hemp. The book says Napoleon found out about these secret hemp deals with England and Russia and was furious and invaded Russia. It also says that this "historical truth" has since been widely covered up or deliberatly "forgotten" about by world goverments that support the illegalisation of hemp.

Does anybody know how much truth there actually is in this?? What are your thoughts about it??
    Nice one :dancy:

Didn't know about the Napoleonic bit, I know that the Brits were blockading Yankee ports to stop them building ships.

Someone mentioned on an earlier thread that it would be an ideal fuel crop, it grows in desert conditions & doesn't need watering.

It is true Hydro it was used as caulking in ship building to keep our ships water tight & of course the ropes.. Isambard Kingdom Brunel used it amongst other things to calk his bridges & it is still there today..

      cool thanks guys.

i watched a programme a while ago that showed how the wireless cables that ran under the ocean at the start of the last century were insulated in thick wrapps of hemp. There is a diagram off a ship called the "USS constitution" in the book and it says over 60 tonnes of hemp were required all in all to build the vessel. Although the main part of the boat is oak wood.

On the back page Zig a number of different companies have put up a reward of 100,000 dollars for anyone who can prove the following statement wrong.

"If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction were banned in order to save the planet, reverse the Greenhouse Effect and stop deforestation; then there is only one known annually renewable natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world's paper and textiles; meet all of the world's transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil, and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time... and that substance is -- the same one that did it all before -- Cannabis Hemp... Marijuana!"

Btw, im not trying to start an online pro hemp rally or anything lol...i just wanted to cross examine the author since he is clearly very pro cannabis.

No Hydro not the Marijuana type have a read below..
This is the plant that does it all Hydro.. Funnily enough I did a workshop about it some years ago with the local history club and I found it fascinating what a superb plant it is & how it could actually solve many o todays problems in the world & help the climate as well, but they don't seem to push it these days, I suppose because of it's illegal sister... There are Hemp farms here again today but grown under strict licence by the Govt..

Also a little known fact that we were still growing our own during the 2nd WW & that was another thing that got us through the war... :WINK1:

I think the author is interested in the sister plant as well though :snork:

I know there is a place down south where the goverment grow cannabis sativa with the maximum THC content possible (under licence) Then they turn the THC into a spray and bottle it, stick on a huge ammount of tax and call it "Sativex" and sell it to pharmacies in the uk lol If you look at the drugs side effects i think they are very very minor in comparison to other medications use to treat the same illness.

quote "The unfertilized female species of cannabis sativa L contains the highest amount of THC"

this is wrong. I think what it is ment to say is the un-pollinated female species

I have watched a few programs about the medical uses & maybe that is a way to go too..
I think we all rely far to much on chemicals & man-made stuff far too much these days where-as I would like to see a good combination of both & a slower change back to some more natural products myself.. Sometimes some of the older ways are better.. Moss is used on the battlefield once again as they have found it it better for field wound dressing..

There are some many wonder plants we ignore today Hydro..

There used to be loads of hemp on the streets of Bridport in the old rope making days, but don't know what it's like of a weekend these days.
