Super Salvias!

Some of those Salvias are really beautiful and there is a lot of variation in the family. I have S. microphylla 'Royal Bumble' which is the same type as 'Hot Lips' mentioned by Strongylodon. They are easy from cuttings and it is a good plan to have some in the cool greenhouse over winter.

 

I've always been on the hunt for the Cambridge Blue variety and can never seem to find it in the nurseries I go to

Went to the Harrogate Flower Show yesterday and bought myself a new Salvia.


Salvia 'Amistad'. - photo Hayloft Plants.

Its very new It seems to have originated in Argentina, and was first noticed in 2005. Its is thought to be hybrid between S. guaranatica and something else (possibly S. gesneriflora). I understand it grows to about 3 to 4 feet and flowers continuously from May till November.

The name means 'friendship' in Spanish and jt was named by Rolando Uria of Argentina and Robin Middleton.

Salvia 'Blaze of Fire' is a S. splendens hybrid. And yes they come on pretty quickly. It's essentially a tender perennial, so it will enjoy any heat that you can give it. ie I suspect that it will come on faster if you keep it on a windowsill inside rather than planting outside now.

 

I planted out my Salvia "Victoria" this afternoon . Under the kitchen window - south facing . Can be hot hot hot in summer. I have also potted on my 4 little Salvia Patens "Cambridge Blue" that I sowed on 25th February. They have a good root system and I have high hopes for them. Their mother *is back in a terracotta pot. I like this Patens because it has a tuber that you can overwinter *. I have a Leucantha that has struggled a bit in the mini GH over the last 2 months but is showing new leaf growth so I am hoping it can join "Victoria" in June.

 

Stuck my hand into the soil at the old house and pulled a couple of roots from Salvia "Black and Blue" - this is the result four weeks later..............

 

Yahoooo! What a lovely suprise this is today. Postman delivered an open immediately box from Hayloft plants.I can't find the paperwork but I know it was after Christmas sometime.... They are magnificent specimens. I hope you can read their descriptions too. Well done Hayloft Plants.
