Maybe I am getting things wrong here, but the top right photo Marley has posted is a Carob! It says so above the photo ...

But I probably agree they may not grow well in Poland ... :dunno:

I'm becoming really confused now, but at my age confusion is a fact of life.:old:

We fed Locust beans to our cattle....they are lovely and sweet and often snacked ourselves.

The word "Locust" is the problem, I thought it was an insect:biggrin:

        Anyway, Black locust, Robinia pseudoacacia.
        Honey locust, Gleditsia triacanthos.
        Locust bean, Ceratonia siliquia.

Different trees, first two from North America and able to withstand very harsh winters, but really needs hot summers.
Last one, I think, a tree from the Mediterranean area, which needs mild winters and hot summers.

A case of common names causing confusion yet again.:WINK1:

I've been back to the tree where I found my pods.
I'm pretty sure it's a Locust of sorts.
          Here are the photos:
Seeds. ( the pods are just like the ones in the OP)

People eat them here as snacks (as do dogs :dunno: ). Personally, I cannot see how anyone can eat the pods unless one has iron teeth! :hate-shocked: Our friend sells his to the local merchant ... it's not a lot but you have to clear the ground anyway and do something with the pods so may as well get something for them. As I mentioned above, it is ground and used as a chocolate substitute.

Pal, where did you have a Locust bean tree?

          Definitely Gleditsia triacanthos.

But looks like a possible graft onto something other, strange shape in the stem.
Does the bark change at that point?

No,no change in the trunk. The same thorns are also above and below the 'strange shape', which is where the tree has been hacked back at some point. ( As seems common in France.)

                I think Pete was right.
I sowed 5 beans and 3 germinated. I've removed one of the germinated 'trees' from the pot and here's what the two remaining ones looked like yesterday.
I'll pot one on and see how it develops over the next couple of years.

Wow yours look better than mine.
I planted some seeds from another similar tree a few days after the first lot, too.
I only have one growing from the first lot. (My chickens got them.)
I'll post a photo later. You can definitely see the difference between the two types of tree.

                  These are two of mine.
The one on the left is the one from the pods I first planted. It looks different to yours, even though our beans and pods from the first postings looked identical.
The one on the right, was from the second lot of beans. (a different tree.)

I'd say Left is Robinia, right is Gleditsia.:)

The tree that the one on the right came from had lovely "Wisteria" like blossom on it. :)

Yes Mandy the one of yours on the right looks pretty much the same as mine. It'll be interesting to see what they look like this time next year!
