I put killer on a large stump and it took more than 10 years to completely rot down!

I don't think it's possible to avoid the digging but have a pair of loppers to hand and as you see each root snip through it so that at least you're removing its food source until you get the time to dig it out. I'd also remove as much soil as possible from around the roots as in my experience they will dry out a bit which also makes them a bit easier to handle, also means you can see them. If you find roots about 1 inch thick, you can sometimes tug at them (tug towards the tree stump) which will help to loosen the thicker part closer to the tree. Best of luck!

I am going to put some deep root or similar (have to look in shop later) and give it a month or 2 to work along the roots. ( will dig it all out then) i think i have found where the roots stop so the root free part i will dig over snd sift the soil a 8ft by 5ft square and turn that into a small raised bed veg plot to play around with while i do the rest of the garden.
I don't mind waiting as i will still have a little part to play around with and i have quite a few large pots already in use.

If you put stump killer on, cover the stump with a bucket or similar for the first couple of weeks. This will give the stump killer chance to work without being washed off if it rains, and also keeps the dogs/little ones away from the stump.
