There was a plant sale at my son's school on Wednesday with sunflowers that every child in the year had planted. Just wondering if I should transfer this to a bigger container and how big it should be? Thanks again :)

From my experience each year with the red variety which grow to about 5' the roots are fairly shallow and compact so based on that, if it was me, i would put in 6-8" pots. Not sure about the yellow variety though which grow much bigger but if the pot is slightly too small for them perhaps their growth may be stunted accordingly. Based on the size in the pic, it might be an idea to put it in a window and keep turning it round to keep the stem as straight as possible before putting outside especially in the current blazing sun. In the absence of any other replies the above might help.

Thanks Scorpio, I just went ahead and repotted it in a bigger container two days ago. When I took it out the rootball was all over the existing soil so I guess the time was right!

Cheers also for the advice about keeping the stem straight, although the weather is overcast again here now! Oh well...

      Hi Zesty

I would plant out now if you can or in 10 days they will appreciate being out of the pot and into the border soil , put a cane in to start them off and loosely tie in they will soon toughen up

Thanks Spruce but I don't have any border soil! Pots and troughs (or whatever the name for them is) is all I have at the moment.

Get a very large pot and feed with tomato food during the summer at least once a week plus they are thirsty plants once established but dont go crazy with the water at the moment

Plus we want a picture when it flowers

I've repotted it into a pot that's about 5-6" diameter, how big is a very large pot and at what point do I repot it? Sorry if these questions seem obvious but this is the first time I've tried anything like this and I know nobody green-fingered...

Of course I wil provide pics :)

I have two dwarf sunflowers in a pot that's about 16 inches across and about 18 inches deep if that's any help. :)
