We have had this bird house for 4 or 5 years now , tried it in several locations in the garden . I followed position and aspect instructions from various webpages - and - nothing ! They never even looked at it . Last weekend a pair of Blue Tits moved in :hapydancsmil: I know its a little late for them to nest but you never know.
The photo will not win wild life photo of the month ! But you can just see a little head if you squint . They are so fast and digital shutters and me are so slow .

I squinted, Harry....just managed to see it. I've put up 4 new boxes this year but so far no takers. I've also put one in the roof of the Arbour I built last year, but, again now takers as yet. If those Blue Tits have moved into your bird box now it's going to be a pretty sure bet they'll be back in it next year:snork:

I would leave it, Harry, as the scent from the previous "nesting" by the birds will, to me, reassure them. Some experts recommend cleaning out the boxes for hygiene purposes but, not being an expert, I would let the birds look after their own hygiene, after all they've been nesting for thousands of years so they should now what they're doing!!!:snork:

I was under the nest box this morning - and - heard little chirping sounds :dbgrtmb: So they have mated and hatched 23 days to fledging , so we will miss it due to holidays , but it means Maya won't be barking at them !

Is it safe getting a bird box if you have a lot of cats in your area?? I never even put bird food out coz its like that cravendale advert round here and i worry the cats will take advantage.

The box needs to be at least 6' off the ground and somewhere where a cat can't reach it, Hydro. The fledglings are always go to be in danger when they're learning to fly not only from cats but other predators. I reckon it's worth taking the risk if you choose the site carefully:thumbsup::snork:

The birds are aware of what's going on around them Hydro. They have the instinct to know what's safe and what isn't and will chose where they nest. Regarding food.....a bird table is best and if possible situated in open lawn so they can see what's approaching them, then they'll be off. :)

Hi Hydro, none of my bird boxes are in trees as too many predators can climb or fly into tree for easy access. Mine are on posts over 6' high around the garden, except for the one I installed permanently in the Arbour roof, but they can go on the side of garages, houses, any high walls. Just make sure that they're not exposed to the Sun all through the days as it could bake the fledgings and possibly kill them through heat exhaustion.

I have a friend who has sited the box alongs side the bedroom window. In that box, sparrows are into their 2nd brood. Along past another bedroom window is a shiny ornamental ivy and a box is in there. Nuthatches have taken up residence and successfully raised their young. Cats cannot get tohthem but a sparrowhawk has shown interest. You can only do so much,
