    Hi,

In my Japanese gardenig book "All About Creating Japanese Gardens", there is a photo of a Lady Fern Athyrium Filix-Femina. Over the past few days I've been looking for it online, but the one that keeps coming up doesn't look anything like the photo in my book.

The one in the book looks to me like a spiral staircase if that makes sense. There is a stem and the fronds are winding their way up the stem. My mother says it looks like mint.

Has anyone got any idea to what this might be?

    Thanks:)

    Calum

    Hi joolz68,

It looks something like that, but the stems grow upright rather than flopping over and it looks nicer. The info in the book says its an North American native.

    Thankss:)

I agree with Joolz (edit - and Val :)). I've looked in my RHS Plant Book (don't know what I'd do without it) and that pic you've got looks exactly like the Athyrium Filix-Femina Frizelliae in there. The pic in my book looks a lot more upright than the pic that Joolz has linked to, so maybe it 'goes over' a bit more with age?

            Thanks Ziggy:)

Gemini, Jo and *dim* - Thanks for your help, but I have a feeling this isn't the right 1, because its the European type which flops. The type I'm trying to find is from North America, which stands upright according to the discription. I might be totally wrong but I have to go off you guys as I'm just learning about ferns:)
