Hi all as we are slowly getting this jungle sorted. I came across this I think its some type of old rose. The main one stem has bark type covering with thorns & is about 2 3/4 inches thick and a second main stem which is about 2 1/4 thick. The other 4 not as thick as you can see by the pictures. The height of this rose if it is a rose is at least 20 foot in the picture one of the stems is looping over the top of the tree. We have started clearing carefully around this plant as its obviously has some age.The bungalow is about 50 yrs old at least. What I'd like to know is first is it a rose if so how can I find out something about it. Also can I cut it back to about 3 or 4 foot and getting cuttings from it. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated..

Well, it is a rose, Kel, but which one it is is another matter:scratch: We'll need it to flower to have a crack at I.D.ing it. It's not really the time of year to cut it back and it would be better if you could wait until early Winter.....which is a long way away. It might be a really good rose and it would be a shame to destroy it........but you've realised that already:snork:

Thanks for that ..had not planned to cut it back as yet as wanted advice first. How do you tell the age of a rose..if that is at all poss  .Seeing the flower will also be another mission. How on earth I will get to take a picture up that high..I've no idea.

It might flower lower down, Kel, there's no telling as yet. As for the age. well, as you said the Bungalow is 50 years old so............:dunno::snork: It's obviously going to be one of the old climbers, but lets see what the flowers look like.

Thanks.. I'm really pleased to say..as I'm still cutting/clearing back this section I've found another old rose like this first one.Looks old and is very tall they look the same.I just cant get to it at the moment going to carefully cut/clear my way to it.As don't want to damage it. Can't believe it its special having one very old massive rose but two. This garden is like a pandora's box. The first thing I found was a very old door looks like a very old red castle door about 8/9 foot high and about 4 foot plus wide. Cant wait for the roses to flower I hope they do.

Opening Pandora's Box is bad news, according to legend, but it seems to me as though your garden is a Treasure Chest.:snork: It's a possibility that both roses are the same, but my gut feeling is that gardeners very rarely plant two like climbers together and like to plant two different varieties for contrast......we'll see!!:heehee:

OK OK.. Treasure Chest :lunapic 130165696578242 5: so would two different varieties look the same growth wise..width/height/stems,I ask as its the same as the other. May sound silly but I really don't know. I guess will only know when it flowers. They are planted 15-20 foot apart

Yes, it's quite possible for them to look similar, depending on the variety. It's not silly to admit you don't know.......I do it all the time.:snork::heehee:

So looking forward to flower piccies kels. That's the wonderful thing about roses. Whatever the degree of neglect, they still put on their annual display. No wonder the dog rose features in our Royal heritage.
