...one to rot, an one to grow.

    Or so I've heard.

Next time I have a go at beans, do I really have to plant four times as many as I want?

      Clueless,

I sow my beans under cover in modules, then plant out from there and for climbers it's two plants per cane. As far as numbers are concerned I will generally plant 6-10 more than I need or whatever fills the module tray up. I sowed 32 climbing borlotti beans this year and planted 25 plants on 12 canes. I sow as much as I can under cover where I have more control and can get faster germination by giving bottom heat to the seeds, then if I have failures I will know about it sooner and can re-sow as required.

      Steve...:)

Runner Beans seedlings have the seed cotyledons below ground for a while and can still be attacked by mice after planting out (they mice eat through the stem at the same time killing the plants), so it's still worth sowing spares if using the module method. With French Beans the cotyledons form the first 'leaves' so don't suffer in this respect.

Thanks Scrungee - I can't believe how much I have learnt about growing beans from this site . If you go over the bean posts from this season , there are lots of tips and how to's you won't find on other "expert" sites.
Well done beanie GC gurus , take a bow :dbgrtmb:

Ps: Clueless I like the rhyme , I can just see an old hag saying it .
          One for the mouse
          One for the crow
One to rot, and one to grow. ( cackle )

Do we have any old hags on GC ? :snork:
