I have two large Carex (at least I think they are Carex)!! The leaves on top have gone black. Can you cut all the top leaves off to show the newer growth underneath and if so when is this best done?? I have tried to insert an image but it wouldn't work so have attached an image but dont know if that has worked either???

Yep.. you can cut (or try pulling out) the old ugly leaves.

If your somewhere with hard winters you might want to wait til early spring to do it.. but you can do it at any time

    Hmmm.

My instinct would be, if they are untidy I would just take off the top third. The remaining 2/3rds will protect any new growth.

Then in the late winter/early spring watch out for the new growth and give a final trim - taking care not to damage the new growth.

Carex are evergreen grasses so don't cut them down, just either pull or cut the dead leaves out to tidy it up :gnthb:

Thanks to all above - I will wait until the present cold spell is over and then remove all those black leaves and hopefull not have too much to remove in Spring.
I saw one recently in Nottcutts Bargain Corner which had been completely pruned down to the bottom, which made me think about what I could do with mine.
    Thanks again from Letty
