Im sick and tired of reading different planting conditions for the same plant !!
I went to the garden centre, same plant from different suppliers saying different things ! Go on the 'tnet, different web sites, different planting conditions !!
Im also tired of the "preferred" bit on the tags !! You know "enjoys, well drained but moist soil" DONT THEY ALL !! Why dont they put a "tolerates" part and most of us do not have the "perfect soil".
    Rant over.

Know what you mean. 'Well drained soil and full sun or partial shade' seems to apply to the vast majority of planting instrustions. Even for Lobelia Cardinalis which thrives in damp boggy conditions.

Worse than that, I bought a book written by a certain overrated famous gardener aimed at making the most of the shadier parts of my back garden. A large section of the book is a directory of plants for the various conditions. As is so often the case, next to each plant is a collection of symbols describing the conditions for the plant, so you look up what a certain symbol means, and it says....

              ...Prefers or tolerates some shade.

'Prefers or tolerates'? Which is it then?

The general rule seems to put on each label what the optimum growing conditions are for each plant. Most (granted not all) plants LOVE a moist but free draining soil. This is no good to me. I need to know what the plant can tolerate for it to survive and do ok.
How many of us have the perfect soil ?

Its no good saying to me Cornus loves a moist free draining soil when i know full well it does great in wet clay !!
