You are not the only person who is skeptical about the origin of the universe and the big bang. Thats why they are doing the experiments in the first place! I have heard people working at the LHC on TV saying themselves they dont think the higgs boson exists thats not to say they are wasting there time they are simply trying to prove or disprove different scientific theories ranging from dark matter, the origins or the universe, parralell dimensions and who knows what else. Even if they dont find higgs boson there is still lots of other things they can be doing to keep themselves busy - its called scientific research and without it there would not even be jedi knights or C3POs Here are just some of the things they are looking at. But there website is better!

Other open questions that may be explored using high energy particle collisions:

It is already known that electromagnetism and the weak nuclear force are different manifestations of a single force called the electroweak force. The LHC may clarify whether the electroweak force and the strong nuclear force are similarly just different manifestations of one universal unified force, as predicted by various Grand Unification Theories.
Why is the fourth fundamental force (gravity) so many orders of magnitude weaker than the other three fundamental forces? See also Hierarchy problem.
Are there additional sources of quark flavour mixing, beyond those already predicted within the Standard Model?
Why are there apparent violations of the symmetry between matter and antimatter? See also CP violation.
What are the nature and properties of quark-gluon plasma, believed to have existed in the early universe and in certain compact and strange astronomical objects today? This will be investigated by heavy ion collisions in ALICE.

Have to admit i am quite excited about this and i have no idea what it is and all the scientists on the news seem to think we are on the verge of a huge revolution in our understanding of the universe!

I'm quite excited by this too. I think we are privileged to be living in very interesting times in terms of scientific advances. Not just with this latest high profile discovery, but in recent years we've seen it confirmed that other stars have planets around them (probably obvious, but now confirmed), there's been successful experiments into quantum computing and the brand new alternative to electronics called 'spintronics'. We've had private companies get a vehicle into space, and there's one huge telescope in the pipeline (well actually its loads of big telescopes and a powerful computer that's going to make it seem like one very huge telescope).

If we can get through the next couple of decades without blowing a hole in spacetime and sucking the entire universe through an infinitely small hole in a few nanoseconds, then we should see some pretty clever stuff come out of it all.

I think i rememeber seeing on TV or reading somewhere that to create a black hole big enough to destroy planet earth, you would need a particle accelarator the size of the solar system! Nuclear war, a holocaust or a serious natural disaster or plague is our best hope of population reduction

don't worry .... they are working on it...

watch this youtube clip (I've been following this from the start when we had the BP oil spill) ....

it's getting out of hand now and not much is being said in the news .... but it's widely discussed on some forums
