I was sent this link from a friend who is raving about them.. He is a nurseryman so gets to hear of all sorts, but these he is very impressed with.. I have yet to see any when out & about at garden centres, but he is well impressed with a trial he has`seen. The roots were impressive on all plants grown in them.. So he is going to use some next year...

Has anyone seen them in use or heard of them.? I am very intrigued.. Looks like they could be the answer for trees in pots for sure.. Well I hope... Anyway have a look & tell mewhat you all think.. Make sure you have the sound on when you play the video too.. :):thmb:

Not heard of them before Marley.

It looks a very interesting idea, but I'm thinking its more aimed at commercial growers.

I'm just wondering if I could ever keep up with the watering on summer days, fine perhaps if you have lots of pots close together and an irrigation system.

But I dont think most of us garden like that.

Wouldn't mind giving them a try though.

:) Sounds good to me,I have seen pictures of plants in them, but didn't realise the science behind them which seems perfectly feasible.
Can I have mine in terracota colour please lol.

Well I thought I would like to\ try some, going to find out more if I can, but yes I think growers mainly at present, as my friend is, but it would be good to see if my friend will part with a couple just to try.. I think the science side of it is so simple but brilliant.. Probably costs a bomb to produce them still or something, but very interesting none the less...
Well of course we would want the terracotta type roders..... :hehe:

I looked at their retail section, and after following many different links, I eventually found some prices. They seem quite expensive to me. Perhaps they are really good, but one of the selling points is "to reduce losses", I wonder how many fewer losses you'd have to have before the product paid for its self.

I thought I had come across something like this before
    http://www.proptek.com/pages/forestry/trays/index.php?ref=1GAL

I,m not sure either products are suitable for long-term. We already practise root-pruning when we re-pot our shrubs and cut back the roots.

What it will produce is better shrubs in the retailers.

It appears to me that maybe the pots used for water plants might provide some of the same benefits.

    Agree about the irrigation concerns

Very interesting Marley. But like the others I am not quite sure where it fits in. I bet its difficult getting the plants out of those pots when you want to pot up.

However it does concentrate the mind on what the roots are actually doing in a pot. So often they just wind round in circles.

Well the way I look at it is, yes they are aimed at growers at present, but if you bring your own trees & shrubs on with fantastic root systems as they say, then it has to be worth the expense to me anyway... To have young trees & shrubs with such a root system stands them well to cope well in the ground.. Why can't a pot saucer be used anyway as we do withour other pots if one is worried with drying out..... I have saucers or trys to fit up to 20" pots..
I water my trees & large shrubs 2 -3 times a day in hot weather anyway & I don't see that it would actually be any worse...
Growers don't have time to water constantly.. Yes they have irrigation systems often at beginning & end of day, but to get root systems the way they say & with the shape of the sides in the pot they are not supposed to dry out that quickly, well no quicker than other well drained pots so I have been told.......

Is the pot only a single journey pot?

i.e. not re-usable because you might have to destroy the pot to get the plant out?

I've seen those pots somewhere this year but for the life of me can't remember where.

Peter watch the assembly video it is a sinch to get the plants out & the idea for them is a fantastically strong root system for growing on...! :thmb:
It would be nice to know a tree bought for something special at least had a strong pretty much gauranteed root system like that to grow away with wouldn't it..?
If you watch the assembly vid, I see no reason why you couldn't re-use them kindred as they just wind around the base & are secured with a pin that you can undo & do back up... The only thing could be deteriation of the actual recycled material that they are made from..Then again they are talking of plants being in them for 4yrs or more.. So not sure.. I would love to actually see one, that was why I was wondering if any of you had anywhere.. :D You will have to try & remember kindred.... :thmb:

Ooops! Small attention span! :dh:

I only watched the first video. And two sentences passed through my mind. "Hey! I've seen those somewhere before". and, "They seem like a good idea."

Prices are not too bad for a re-usable product. (I presume you could use plastic cable ties instead of that gun thingymagimmy) £32 for 25 1 litre pots and £55 for 25 5 litre pots.

Anything would be better than roots twirling around and around in conventional pots and resisting with all their might your attempts to get them to untwirl. :lollol: :lollol:

I'm not convinced. I think the roots would still go round and round, because if they won't come through the side holes or die off where do the ofshoots go. Not only that but the holes will become closed with all the dead ends of roots, then what?

It's what you beleave in yourself that matters.

Iv'e had trouble with Jiffy 7's with the net stopping roots from coming through.
