Hello! I am pretty much an amateur when it comes to gardening, as I've spent a lot of my life living in flats with no garden! Where I live now in Hampshire, has a lovely sized garden, but was left alone for a long time (about 8 years!) so a couple of years ago we started work on reclaiming it (very slowly, weather and work permitting). I am enjoying getting rid of the weeds, ivy and all sorts we have in our garden, but we dont want to clear it out completely. We get ALOT of feathered visitors in our garden, as they really like the cover they get when visiting (we also get birds using our trees and air-raid shelter as a nesting spot!)There are tree's, including twisted hazlenut, there are some roses dotted about...but the one thing we are struggling with is ivy and japanese knotweed!

Its coming together but as soon as we get a lot of rain, we dont get out there and when we come back out, we have a ton of new growth! Fun times!

Anyway...I look forward to picking up tips, and identifying some of our flowers etc and also perhaps getting some ideas :)

Hope you are all well, and I look forward to speaking with you all :)

Hello and welcome to the forum:)

                Japanese Knotweed eh? :sofa:

I've always wondered about that one. Its got a formidable reputation, but if you subjected it to a twice weekly barrage of Round Up, would it stand a chance? (Not a rhetorical question, I genuinely don't know).

Probably the number 1 rule of war, know your enemy. If you haven't done so already, I'd have a good read up about Japanese Knotweed before you get to it. Not just in terms of its control, but also in terms of disposing of it, and using the ground afterwards etc. I know there are struct rules about Japanese Knotweed, for example you can't just stick the dead bits in your green waste bin, and I think there may even be rules about transporting it.

Good idea on reading up! I'm guessing the best way of disposing of it is to burn it? We have quite a few fires in the garden, as its the main way we get rid of all the stuff were cutting back in our garden, so have no issue with burning it in the garden (if thats the best thing to do with it) :)
