I've so far declined to comment on this topic, because to be honest some might think my views are a tad draconian.

The way I see it, and supposedly the way the law sees it, the instant you climb into the driver's seat of any motor vehicle, you accept full responsibility for everything that happens to that vehicle. You know that even a little toy car like a Saxo is potentially a lethal weapon.

With that in mind, anyone that drives while over the limit, or while talking on their phone (this one, I reckon, and various agencies now reckon, is more dangerous than being just over the limit), too fast, while too tired, etc etc etc, should be treat the same as someone that walks out into the street carrying a loaded gun.

I'm not talking about people who have accidents through no fault of their own, I'm talking about total idiots that think they are above the law and better than everyone else, who knowingly put other people's lives in danger through their own arrogance.

I frequently rode my motorbike after drinking when I lived in the Caribbean in the 80s. Pile out of the bar after uncountable Cuba Libres, no helmet, high heels, hitch up any trailing skirts, and away you go. I never fell off or hit anything.

Don't try this at home, kids.

Like *Dim*, as teenagers I often was driven by my boyfriend after he'd had a skinful. Luckily the breathalyser was introduced just in time to save us from ourselves.

These days I don't even have a half of bitter and drive, and don't appreciate it if friends have a drink before driving me.

Francine Austin admitted to being 1.5 times over the legal limit the following day after killing Brenda Wilson (a local primary school teacher) injuring her friend and killing the dog. She checked herself into the priory after 6 months claiming her was depressed. She has never once said Sorry or shown any remorse. The Judge said she should spend 3 years in prison but his hands were tied due to doctors reports.

I have no doubt she was depressed - so have Brenda Wilsons husband, her son, her daughter and the rest of the family - this does not mean she should avoid punishment.

Once the doctors have "treated" her at he priory and found her well - she should go straight to prison to serve out her time.

If this was a 20 year old man - he would have gone straight to prison.

          Money Talks.

To say you're sorry means you have to ADMIT that what you did was YOUR fault. People don't take responsibility for their actions anymore. Always blaming someone/something else.

              You are so right Alex...!!!!

I am disgusted by her total lack of remorse as well for what she has done..!! Still if the money is there to enable one to get off seems it is perfectly OK in their book to do so & tough on the bereaved family.........!! It is utter rubbish..

In my mind she murdered that woman.... Sorry but that is how I feel about it all.....

The whole episode seems pretty shoddy, but I wonder, do we actually know Mrs Austin isn't troubled by what happened?

She might have been told to keep schtum in public for legal reasons. Or maybe she is so mortified by what has happened that she has blocked it all out.

I hope she is mortified Clara & it will be with her for the rest of her life I know, but my thoughts are... You cannot kill a person in that way & not have to live with the consequences the rest of your life......

She should not have been behind the wheel at that time..!!

According to the papers she has shown no remorse anyway.......

I'd throw the key away for anyone caught drink driving. There should be a zero tolerance for driving after having consumed 'any' alcohol.

When I was 16yrs old, my best friend was killed by a drunk driver. His body was dragged 100 yards or so down the road, the driver then just drove home and left him for dead.
I still remember walking into the intensive care unit the next day, only to be shouted at by a nurse for being in there. When I tried to explain why I was there, she simply shouted that he was dead, now get out!

I never could face my friends mum again, and the simple of words of how sorry I was for his death were never said.

Eddie that is so tragic to have happened to your friend & so young... Just starting out in life... Strange how some people think so little of the value of the life of another person..

Worst of it was that the police prosecuted the wrong person. The dad took the blame for the incident, when it was in fact the son driving.
Something that I feel bad about is that the father turned up on a job that I was working on some 2O-25yrs ago and I made his life hell. He quit after 2 days and I feel quite guilty about that now. Oddly I don't mind the son and get on fairly well with him. Sadly he has his own health issues that I wouldn't wish upon him or anyone else.

With refernce to my friend, we grew up together and were inseparable. Two hours before his death, we had put another friends push bke right at the top of a very large oak tree. We must spent ages passing it from one to the other as we climb up.
When my daughter was born, the very first thing that I did when she arrived home, was to take her to the graveyard to show him how lovely that she was. It may sound strange, but it felt right.

You could have made things much worse for them by reporting them for perverting the course of justice Eddie so don't feel guilty about it anymore.

That doesn't sound strange, it was the right thing to do.
