Hi - our cherry tree had little blossom this year and soon after it had blossomed the leaves started to fall as if it were autumn. The leaves look to have been attacked by something (see photo) has anyone any ideas as to what it could be and how it could be treated.

    Hi Kilmington

From the photo it looks like 'shot-hole', which is a symptom of bacterial canker. This disease is caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. morsprunorum and is alarmingly disfiguring and unaesthetic, but only occasionally fatal to trees. Are there any other defects or symptoms on the tree such as blotchy, distorted or peeling bark?

There is no treatment for the disease, and the appearance of shot-hole does not indicate that the tree will necessarily contract the full canker phase of the infection.

    Thanks HarmonyArb

The bark does not appear to be affected. So if there is no treatment and therefore the tree wont get any better is the next stage to cut it down and plant a new one? If so what are the risks of any new tree contracting the same disease?
