A blank cavass- help required

Hi dim, if i provide the length of each section are you able to advise plant quantities ( mainly huechera) i.e one section you presumed was about 6 metres is 3.5 metres. Is that possible?

 

no probs .... If planting huechera in one row, space them at 350mm apart

if you plant 2 rows (one row behing the other), space the rows 350mm apart, and plant the huechera 350mm apart ... the back row is then staggered (the plants go in the centre of the plants of the first row) ... so the spacing is still 350mm apart

 

Dim measurements as follows

Under kitchen window- 12ft x 1.5ft

Side of garden semi shade- 10ft x 1.5ft

full sun 7ft x 1.5ft

Semi shade- 13ft x 2ft

if you are looking at huechera, plant them approx 350mm apart (if you want them to be 'full')

so, under the kitchen window, you will need 10

side of garden, you will need 8

full sun you will need 6

semi shade you will need 11

also check which ones are suited for sun and which are suited for shade/semishade

Im still planning the other plants too, not just a garden full of huechera, i know im limited by space but i want a bit of variety too.

The rest of Dim's plants also good, I am unsure if the Chamaerops humilis palm is hardy where you are.

Plenty of flower choices. I had Liatris up to six foot tall, Begonias big as footballs etc.

Order seed and plant catalogues, also look in pound shops, Wilkinsons for garden bargains.

 

Are there any plants i can put at the front of the sleepers that drape over the edge? I dont want height as that would obstruct the plants behind. Thanks!

 

Bacupa white ones and purple ones with flop over a wall, or in hanging baskets.

Or Juniper with good drainage, add some small bit grit. Or some of these.

Alyssum saxtile or Aubretia are good for going over the edge.
If you look at these you find they are pleasing to the eye and can be controlled after flowering by cutting back to allow the new growth to come through.

Fantastic answer for a blank canvas. I also have a bare garden and was looking for some inspiration. After reading this last night it inspired me to start my collection so I bought some plants today as I am on a limited budget but decided if I buy 2-3 each week then I can soon have an exotic garden rather than my normal "conventional" one !!

 

I wouldn't worry about it, it'll be out of fashion in a couple of years.

If you must, lots of it is hardy, e.g. the bergenias and you can plant lookalikes e.g. fatsia instead of tetrapanax or ricinus. It's the look, rather than the actual planting, that counts.
