    I have a couple of trees on my wish list, one of which is a magnolia. Which magnolia I don't know yet. The size of my garden dictates it will be a medium sized tree as far as magnolias go. So anyone got a magnolia they like the look of or would recommend ? I know this isn't found in everyones garden so feedback may be little I think.

    One of the smaller cultivars of Magnolia grandiflora
    They are evergreen with fantastic flowers.
    Have a look on the Burncoose website. They have a huge range of Magnolias.

      I planted a Magnolia grandiflora 'Maryland' in my mum's garden over 10 years ago against a south facing wall and its still only about 12ft tall, the only pruning that has taken place is stems growing away from the wall. They can of course be grown as free standing shrubs/trees too.

      Have a look at these;

      You'll be spoilt for choice :biggrin:

        Hi Gazania,
        I have magnolia soulangeana, I love both their flowers and leaves (deciduous). But the flowers can range from white, cream to soft pink to slightly darker pink, so you best make sure you see the plant flowering if the colour is very important to you. I chose this plant because it has a very open habit, it will not become a dense, shade-casting tree (in comparison to most other trees).I grow it in full sun. Admittedly it would probably best grow not in full sun as the leaves pale out in spring, but becomer darker during the year. But I have seen them mostly in a fully sunny location elswhere, and mine grows very well too. they don't like pruning by the way, but there is nothing to prune anyhow.
        There is magnolia nigra too, but I don't like their flowers (shape +dark pink-crimson colur), but maybe it's sth for you, although I don't know if that's a shrub or tree.

            Thanks for the info :) The Australian and UK websites give a good indication of what is available. The more you look the more you realise just how many there are to choose from. The background to mine would be a bright white wall. So a flower with some colour would look best. Also I would like to have it as a medium sized shrub.
            On the subject of Australia, our son is in Australia for a couple of months staying near Sydney and visited the Botanical Gardens yesterday. Mind blowing ! Now if only he got a job there and invited us over to stay :dancy:

            Bilbo675,
            I have had some of the Pseudopanax. Did really well for me.
            Am sure their Magnolias will be of equal quality.

            I think I bought my sister magnolia Susan some years back. NOW, I can't recall seeing it lately ! Perhaps she left it when she moved ? :frown:
