Wasn't going to, but my colleague who sits next to me went on and on about how wonderful it is, so I bought it.

It's badly written (like a poor Mills and Boon) and the mucky bits are unrealistic and not very good.

I would have given up after a few chapters but she told me to keep going cos it gets better later on. I got about halfway through and gave up

I made her tell me what happened in all three books so I don't have to read them  although I will persevere and finish the first book when I've got nothing else to do.

Contrary to popular belief, it's not the mucky bits which my friend enjoyed, it's apparently the love story, which is quite gripping if you can get over the urge to vomit at the writing prose.

Completely agree with Merleworld. I downloaded it to my Kindle and really cannot be bothered to read it. It is so badly written that I found it irritating! Still, the author has earned millions, so I don't supposed she's bothered whether anyone likes it or not. Someone somewhere has really hyped this series of books up! It's awful - don't bother!! I only wish I'd started to try to read it within Amazon's "return" period and I could have had my money back!!!

A formula money spinner (sex, and in this case bondage, sells). More millions to be made from the film and it's sequels.
Other publishers are jumping on the Shades bandwagon by spicing up (rewritting) classics adding made up 'missings scenes' what a sick world!

Personally, in a broader debate I think it's good that woman have a choice about what they read and do in what otherwise is male dominated area. There are things that women don't do, as it is regarded as a taboo. This seemingly (not read it) badly written book is helping to bury one of them.:blue thumb:

'Romance' to put it lightly, once you've read one, you've read them all! They are like womens magazines, same thing time and again, so boring and a load of rubbish!

I'm reading about a 17th century hangman/executioner and his daughter at the moment, a murder mystery. Although it's a novel, it contains a certain amount of fact and to me is an interesting read. I read a lot of history, fiction and non-fiction anyway. :)

I expect i'll be reading it. I enjoy a bit of titillation as much as the next person and will want to know what the fuss is about.

I wonder what the grounds for return would be, Prudence? Channel 4 once aired a series which was flagged up in advance as being raunchy and controversial. There were several complaints about the sexual content, all saying the same thing: not mucky enough. If the viewers could have sued under the Trade Descriptions Act, they would certainly have done so.
