Apparently a poster printed in 7 different languages, features 'gibberish' for the arabic translation.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-18911599

At risk of sounding a bit naughty, dare I say it, but if the poster is for display in England, and one of the translations is not up to scratch, then maybe instead of everyone getting upset about our failure to translate to their language, why not learn our language while they're here.

If I go abroad and see a sign that has been translated very badly into English, I don't get upset about it. I acknowledge that the nation was so welcoming that they tried for my benefit and the benefit of people like me who went to their country without bothering to learn their language.

Its just not worth getting upset about.
As you say, they tried, maybe got it wrong, but it happens all the time when other countries try to put something in English.

Oh dear. It brings back unhappy memories of my time working for a firm which sold film and tv programmes abroad. An Arabic translation of Thunderbirds went a bit wrong and our friends in the Middle East were shocked to find that Brains had a potty mouth.

Ordinarily I'd agree but it has special relevance to the olympics, an international event that we're hosting so I think in this case the sign should have been correct. It's not as if we're short of arabic speakers in the UK so why 'the supplier' (couldn't have been the train companies fault afterall...) couldn't get it right is beyond me.

What really beats me is why we need a 'Council of Arab-British Understanding' - - a council?!? Is it any wonder this country is beyond skint.

Don't know what all the fuss is about. We British have a proud history of being pants linguists. We don't even know our own languages: remember the bilingual English/Welsh sign, in which 'Cyclists Dismount' became 'Bladder Infection Problem'?

The Normans conquered us, duffed us over, built loads of castles and made French the official language of Britain. We absorbed some French words (notably to do with food) but we resolutely refused to learn the lingo properly. If the Normans couldn't do it by force, no one ain't never gonna do it.

Get used to it, visitors. We're good at pomp, history and processions, particularly when they involved royalty and horses. But we're never going to learn your language.

But where do the Gibbers actually live, I would like to know? Cannot find a country from whence they might originate.

I'd take a photo of it and show all my mates when I got home and we'd all have a laugh about it.
