It was heartbreaking to think that a small girl was distraught with her mother potentially seriously ill/dead near her.

I thought when I read the original article there were a lot of obvious flaws in the story.

Most 3 year olds I know couldn't hold a coherent conversation for 33 minutes, describing details such as those put forward.

Also, if you call from a landline, it can be traced immediately, and a mobile can be traced to within a few hundred metres once the coppers get the records from the phone company.

In any case, I hope it goes without saying that I'm glad it wasn't a real situation.

As for the two perpetrators, a talking to wont do. What should happen now is the parents should now be sued for the cost of the investigation. Even if the case is dropped at the last minute, just so that it scares the parents enough to ensure that Santa isn't coming to their house this coming christmas.

I am sorry, but my 2p worth says posts that say "urgent" or "share this" etc should not be allowed, no matter who posts them. (No offence to anyone)

        My reasoning is simple:
First of all by the time they are posted they are beyond the "helpful time"
They are never checked by the poster to see if they are genuine.
They are a complete waste of time and are just annoying.

I understand that people post them "with good intentions"
But often all you have to do is read them a few times, and re- read the "facts" as clueless1 said there were too many anomalies in the "story" Then you should also check online to see what you can find.

Also by the time they have been read by the majority, they are often too late, currently that one is 7 hours old, and if anyone at this time could have helped, it would be too late now.

I think social networking appeals are worthwhile. If one of my family is in crisis I'd be very grateful if people spread the word by any means available to them.

However I think its important to check the details first. This is the second time this month that I've seen an appeal of this type, and its the second time its proved to be a false alarm. However it only takes a few moments to check it out, which I bet most of us did anyway before racing off to face book.

If after a couple of minutes of googling there is nothing to confirm its a false alarm, then I'd go ahead and spread the word because like them or hate them, social networking sites reach more people more quickly than any other medium.

          Absolute rubbish.

When it was posted the Police were still encouraging people using social media to assist.

What if it was genuine and it was your child?

If it was genuine why would 7 hours be relevant?

It was a Police appeal and until confirmed as a hoax (which I'm sure a few suspected) it was treated as genuine. It was deliberately put on Social Media to increase exposure and chances of success. As soon as it was confirmed as a hoax the search stopped as soon as it started.

It can not be rubbish, since it is my opinion. You may disagree with my opinion, that is fine, but back to the point.

It was never checked before being posted, by re-reading the article, you can see it has some flaws.

I also suggest you have missed the point. The "child" is not, and never was in question, it is the "mother" that is in question, the "child" is fine, since the "child" phoned to say the mother has not moved.
