Just been looking on Amazon and eBay at barbcue grills. I can't believe the price.

I saw one, you have to build yourself a wall at your own expense, then you can add the grill and tray, or a mere £35 plus £10 P&P. Or I can pay well over a hundred quid for a flimsy table thing with a grill.

I've got a better idea. I'll save my money, get a couple of grill meshes for conventional grill pans, build something out of the lumps of sandstone I have in the garden, and generally see what I can botch together.

At the end of the day what is a barbecue grill? Its a place to build a charcoal fire and then place a grill over the top. It isn't rocket science. It shouldn't break the bank.

It sounds as though you have really started to get the BBQ bug.

You don't even need the charcoal. You can simply use the embers from firewood. The only downside to this though is the initial smoke kicked up, and the risk of upsetting any neighbours. In my mind that is the only reason to use charcoal.

Ref the BBQ and making your own. As you have said grill meshes are fine, and just go down to your local amenity tip or even cooker shop and see what has been taken in.

I know that thisone is very crude and ugly, but a BBQ can be made from any oldscrap metal.

I'm going to enjoy keeping an eye on your new found hobby.

I have a Landman (concrete) bbq. The very first time I saw one, I knew that was what I was looking for. But, pricey!!! I waited; waited some more; and then a bit more. Eventually, I got one in a sale :dancy: (my dh is DIY challenged so there was no hope in one being built  )

The only problem I ever encountered was when we moved 2 years ago; the removal men (bless their hearts) didn't know how it was meant to sit together and had to endure me asking them to reassemble it (not once; not twice :nonofinger: but thrice! )

Then, this Spring, when we added water butts, my dh and ds had the "joy" of moving it :heehee:

I *think* what I'm saying is: if you are going to build yourself something, do ensure it is built where you want it to be :blue thumb: (and then leave a space for adding a couple of disposable tray efforts for when you have a larger than usual gathering).
