I VISIT MY DENTIST EVERY SIX MONTHS FOR A CHECK UP,I MUST HAVE GIVEN HIM ABOUT £1000 IN FEES OVER THE YEARS,FILLINGS,EXTRACTIONS ETS ETC.:(
THEY HAVE STARTED A NEW THING "A DENTAL HYGIENIST".
THE SET UP NOW IS IF I DONT REQUIRE ANY DENTAL WORK I HAVE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE "DENTAL HYGIENIST".HE OR SHE INSPECT MY TEETH AND GIVE THEM A CLEAN WITH A SMALL VIBRATING INSTRUMENT WHICH ONLY TAKES ABOUT 5 MINS. DURING THIS TIME I AM INSTRUCTED "HOW TO CLEAN MY TEETH!"
I HAVE BEEN CLEANING MY TEETH SINCE I WAS A CHILD,AND THAT WASN,T YESTERDAY , THEN I PAY MY BILL ,£20 THANK YOU.:skp:
IF YOUR TEETH DO NOT REQUIRE ANY TREATMENT THEY WILL GET YOUR MONEY OTHER WAYS . AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE DENTAL PRACTICE THEY HAVE A DRIVEWAY UP TO THEIR CAR PARK. THE CAR PARK IN GENERAL HAS 5 OR 6 BIG CARS BELONGING TO THE PRACTICE STAFF .
AFTER I HAD MY "DENTAL HYGIENIST" GIVING ME INSTRUCTIONS, (SHE WAS ABOUT THE SAME AGE AS MY GRAND-DAUGHTER ! I ASKED HER A QUESTION,
"WHAT IS THE COST OF DENTAL IMPLANTS"? SHE INFORMED ME IT WOULD COST AROUND £900 PER IMPLANT!.
I INFORMED HER MY NAME AND I WAS NOT SIMON COWELL!!:(
ROLL ON WHEN I AM TOOTHLESS,I WILL SAVE A FORTUNE AND THE DENTISTS/HYGIENISTS CAN GO TO WORK (ON A BICYCLE )!!!! MUSIC.:D

Music, can you lose the capitals please? Online, it's viewed as shouting and it does make it hard to read.

I would recommend dental hygenists. Gum disease can lurk beneath the gum line and not amount of scrubbing gets rid of all plaque, which is what causes gum disease. It would make more sense if we didnt have to pay for any hygenist work, because prevention is better than cure, something doctors bang on about all the time and it would certainly save the NHS a fortune in dental costs.

You're getting a good deal at £20.00 per session - I pay £42.00. Or is that because Scotland gets a better deal when it comes to health care than us here in England?

Alternatively, arrange to have all your teeth taken out in one go and get falsies...problem solved.

I saw a program on the TV a long time ago, about a chap who had opted to go and live on a desert island. He had all his teeth taken out, to be replaced by a continuous rim of concrete false teeth. - That should solve the problem. :D

But on a more serious note it does seem irrational that we get completely free medical treatment on the NHs, but I now have to pay for 100% of dental treatment, because there are no NHS dentists (which are not that cheap) available.

dont get me started about dentists! everytime i go, i get told not to eat chewy sweets, mints, bananas, not to drink fizzy, squash etc. by the time he finishes the list i feel like saying "well, what the f*ck CAN i eat?"

i had 2 bottom molars out 2 months ago, that had been dodgy for years and i was booked in to have a partial denture made (as i have only one molar left at the bottom), but i cancelled it. im managing to eat perfectly well with what teeth i have left, aside from chewy sweets, which im not supposed to have anyway, and I've kept the £198 to give my family a half decent xmas!

im dreading going for the next check up, cos he'll ask why i cancelled. I feel like saying "i'm too fat, so i figured limiting the food I eat is a good idea!" :p

I have to agree about what appears to be high prices.
My last visit cost me nearly £900 !
I now pay about £13 a month into a plan which gets me 3 check ups a year with a clean. I get 24 Hr emergency treatment if I need it and 10% off any any treatment.
I like the 24 Hr emergency after needing treatment one Christmas/Boxing day a few year back. I was in Ramsgate at the time and the only place I could get treatment was London!

I see an NHS dentist for a check up every year. In between I go every three months to the hygienist who spends half an hour cleaning and polishing my teeth. This costs £42 each time but I get that all back from HSA (now called SimplyHealth).

The hygienist does a good job but talks to me as though I was a nervous little boy :hehe:. She also asks me a lot of questions which I haven't a hope of answering with her ultrasound probe in my mouth alongside the suction thingy (technical term :)).

I have been seeing a hygienist at least once a year for over 50 years and have no fillings or false teeth and I eat whatever I like. It seems a good investment. :thmb:

yes shiney your right. at one of my visits to the dentist he had the suction thingy in my mouth(he asked me to hold it !) while his assistant wiped away the excess dripping down my chin, i think i was having a filling at the time as i had wadding between my gums and my jaw.
he then asked me (WHERE ARE YOU GOING ON HOLIDAY THIS YEAR??)

(KENAEESH) i replied ,(OH VERY GOOD, HE SAID) . i was going to TENERIFFE!!!!
i think the dentists will require to learn sign language ,and so will we?. music

First I heard of it. Most Scotsmen I have met have been fairly polite and able to understand that using capitals on a forum is viewed as shouting. Rude, in other words.

hi Alice i think the reason why we are cheaper than perthshire is, my practice only started this new set up with a dental hygienist in house. given time their charges will go up the same as the other practices .i have heard of some ridiculous charges from some friends in the area. at the end of the day the dentists have us at their mercy. how much would you pay when you wake up at
2 o clock in the morning with excrutiating toothache???. music.

Oh...where to start? The prices are ridiculous. I have crooked teeth but was taken to a dentist when I was young. Why didn't he suggest correcting them? Actually, I think it's great that we all don't look like 'hollywoood stars'. Anyway, without going into details, I went to a local dentist who then went private, told me it would cost me £14 pm and that was 12 years ago. Yes my teeth don't look good, but they've never caused me a problem in 50 years! No way was I paying that. Then we moved, got another local dentist who was so nervous she made me feel bad! Never been back.

Yes I regret the way I look, but I'm now too nervous to go again. I clean my teeth, don't have many problems so why should I worry? Hygenists - don't start me on that. Again, it's the hollywood thing. I think it should all come from being taught to brush your teeth when young, if they are not perfectly straight or gleaming white so what?

Blimey, bet some people never speak to me again, lol.

    cheers

hi borrowers i can understand being so nervous with some dentists.
a few years ago i was visiting through in glasgow i had an accident which broke one of my teeth (back tooth) .i was in terrible pain, one of my friends took me to a dentist
in glasgow. she was murder!(.she looked like a woman all in wrestler) she had wrists
thicker than the top of my legs!.she decided the tooth would require extraction.
she had a lot of trouble pulling the tooth,as it had split . she had me on the chair with her knee between my knees pressing down very hard(i thought my jaw was going to break) she eventually got all the tooth out but that was the worst dentist i had ever been at. it put me off for years going to a dentist.:(:(
