Any thoughts on making the use of cycle helmets compulsory.

I dont ride a bike myself, so perhaps I shouldn't comment, but if I did i'd be really p*ss ed off by this.
Yet another infringement on our freedom.

How about not bothering with the helmets and making cyclists either use the pavement or the road, but not both, depending on how they feel at at any particular moment.
Or another novel idea, make cyclists obey traffic lights.

I'm sure its unenforceable, as is almost everything regarding cycling.

The highway code says it is not allowed to bike on the pavements, but around here they all do it because it is far too dangerous to be on the street!

A bit hard to police. A good idea to wear one (even on the pavement) as even falling off with no other vehicle involved could result in a fatal head injury. But no, I'd rather be free to choose.

I had the enjoyment of riding motorcycles without a smackhat, leathers or gloves, but when the law came in I wore a smackhat and all the rest. Still, to feel the wind in your hair and the flies splatting on your teeth. . .

When I'm really an old phart, I think I'll follow Jethro Tull's song - "Too old for rock and roll, too young to die" (up to a point). I might just ride once more on the Bonnie sans hat.

          Cheers, Tony.

            Hiya Pete.

I am both a cyclist(albeit not so much these days) and a motorist. Trust me, it's not only cyclists that 'jump' the lights. As a cyclist, I see motorists jump the lights most days. Indeed, I remember one morning, seeing a driver jump the lights and ploughing straight through a cyclist, and he didn't even stop! I was horrified, as for a while I thought the cyclist was dead. An image that I will never forget. I guess what it boils down to is, where there are human beings, there will be idiots. Oh, I NEVER jump the lights. As a cyclist, there's plenty of tales I could tell, like the time an oncoming motorist actually crossed over to my side of the road to 'buzz' me. I could go on and on.....

It's all about freedom of choice IMO, if you want to, then fine, if you don't then fine.

But you have to be prepared to accept the consequences if you don't & you get a head injury while cycling....!!!!!!!

I stupidly went off road riding on my mountain bike and had a coming together with the ground of a woods, The whole of my right hand side of my face was battered, I got back on and rode home.

I always wear a helmet now, and I do think that cyclists should wear helmets, it only takes a slight knock to your noggin for some real damage to occur, luckily for me ...... Where there is no sense there was no feeling :D

Like Tony I rode motorcycles here before the helmet law came in & rode in the USA as well before they brought the helmet law in there too...... It is exhilarating if the weather is good.. :heehee:

To feel the wind in your hair is great, but I prefer protection today as the chances of an accident these days are much higher.. :hate-shocked:

I see your point Mira, but does making it dangerous for pedestrians make it OK?

I know motorists do jump the lights Freddy, but not that many totally ignore them.
The usual cyclist route at a red light is either up onto the pavement, then back into the road after the lights.
Or possibly the worst, a quick look to see if its clear, and then carry on.

Im giving serious thought to leaving the country because of reasons just like this i am sick of the goverment imposing themselves on every little detail of my life, i feel like have been born into slavery incapable of thinking for ones self i wouldnt mind but they have not got a clue all they do is wade in where they are not needed and make a mess of things and introduce stupid little laws and regulations and paperwork and red tape grrr makes my blood boil :gaah:

Ouch that looks painfull webmaster, but i think to myself i could fall down the stairs and do that, what next we all have to wear helmets when ever we attempt the stairs...

I'm not convinced that wearing a piece of flimsy polysterene on your head gives any protection anyway, suerly to do any good they should be like proper motorbike helmets.

A good friend of mine was knocked off his bike, the helmet he was wearing did take a lot of force from the collision, in fact the helmet fell into 2, but he came away virtually unscathed.
