I have been up to see my new allotment today. I decided to put my name on the list earlier this summer after going to their open day and having a look around. They are actually half plots which suits me as a full one would be too much I think. There's LOADS of strawberries and some raspberries too. The soil is nice and loose and it's well drained so should be fairly easy to get into shape for growing. The people I've met have all been really friendly and it sounds like they help each other out a lot. They also have various get togethers like a party on bonfire night with fireworks and everything. It's within walking distance from me which is ideal. I am quite excited now and can't wait to get the key and get stuck in!! My bit is the front half. Hi catztail,

Looks good nice size too. Im thinking about putting my name down, but think i will wait until father in law retires next year and we take it on together.

Great news Catztail! Good workable soil is worth a mint. Your fellow allotmenteers sound a good bunch too.
        Enjoy.

          Hiya Catztail.

Looks like a half-decent plot there:blue thumb: It doesn't look as though it's been vacated for long, as the weeds don't look too established. Is there water nearby?

I was told it would be a year before one came up but I got lucky. You should check with them as sometimes the wait can be quite some time.

That's great, cos it can be a real pain having to lug water. Thing is, next year is gonna be a scorcher:SUNsmile:

                Zigs, you Knothead! LOL!!
Yes Freddy that thought WAS on my mind! Once I get a shed up I'll get some barrels to collect some rainwater. No plans for a greenhouse since I have 2 at home but that could change. Looking at the tom thread has made my mouth water.......

It's actually a very good time to be taking over. Once you've cleared away those few weeds, you'll be able to get it 'mucked' and ready for next year:blue thumb:

It is! They have a rotovator you can use for a fiver an hour so that will come in handy. There's also an allotment shop nearby where you can buy stuff quite cheap. I may nip over there tomorrow and get some garlic and some onion sets and see what else they have.

                        Hiya Catztail.

Way back, I had an allotment for a couple of years. There too was a shop that stocked most things. Come October (or thereabouts) they used to take orders for seed (Suttons) which came with 33% off (Allotment Association rate), so worth checking for that:blue thumb:

Just a word of caution about rotovators, for a short while I had a piece of ground that had previously been rotovated for years. I came along and tried to do the normal thing, of deeply digging it. About 9inches down the ground was solid, and I MEAN...solid! Obviously, using one now and then shouldn't be a problem, but it's worth bearing in mind:blue thumb:

                        Cheers...Freddy

Will do Freddy! I know it doesn't do any good to over cultivate it. Maybe chuck a load of manure down and give it a quick work in and then leave it alone for winter.
