Hi Slatta & Welcome to GC, it is grown as an anual summer bedding plant here.. It is a plant from tropical areas originaly.. So I would get hold of some seed or plants in the spring.. I see no reason why it shouldn't grow in a pot...Just don't forget to water it in hot weather if you are putting it in pots...!! :D

    Hope that helps..!!!

Slatta - can I be nosey and ask why you want to grow Ageratum particularly?

It is actually quite an interesting plant which I think has been spoilt by breeding for dwarf habit. A few years ago I saw some of the taller varieties used in French municipal bedding and they were stunning, much more balanced, with the look of a rare and obscure perennial.
Did you know Ageratum can also be dried successfully?

I grow dwarf and tall Ageratum for Parks flower beds here, Champion series from 9ins, to Blue Horizon 2 ft plus.
I am not sure why in pots but I'm sure Slatta will enlighten us.:)
