I keep running across this place when googling for information on plants, so I thought I'd join up to ask some questions! I am a relative newcomer to the UK, having grown up in a semi-desert area of the US, and I'm pretty ignorant about a lot of garden basics.

I've only been gardening in any serious way for a year--the last summer was the first time I have ever managed not to kill every green thing around me, and I'm afraid I'm rather addicted to it now!

I have grand ambitions of growing a lot of the vegetables and fruits that are common in the southwestern US but either difficult to find and/or terribly expensive in the Northeast. So far I've had fairly good luck with some things, but I started a lot of my plants far too late in the year so I didn't get as much as I had hoped. But I think I've learned some lessons for next year, and I'm anxious to get started on the new crops!

Hi Mander & [IMG] to GC... I think we all know what it is like to be bitten by the gardening bug one way or another.... There is plenty to read up on here then for you during the coming winter. Maybe even decide what you are going to grow next year & where etc.. Plenty of peole to ask questiones.. We have a pretty good search facility if you want to use it as well... What part of the US are you from & are you over here for a long period...? We have a couple of regular people posting in the US on here as well.... Well look forwrd to seeing you around the forums... :thmb:

Hi Mander - and welcome. We are a bit different from your semi desert home, but the climate in this country is really good for growing many things. The best way to learn is to ask a lot of questions and do a lot of Googling.

I grew up in Colorado but lived in New Mexico just before I moved here (both pretty dry and hot most of the year!). I'm here in the UK indefinitely, having married a Brit. The biggest disappointment I had in the garden this last year was the chile peppers. The plants are still nice and lush looking but they never did flower. Probably because I didn't start them growing until June! I'll be starting them earlier this year for sure!
