Can I safely give a large lavatera a little trim now? I know pruning time is spring, but the one I have in my front garden is looking a bit untidy, particularly since I cut back a California lilac behind it. I don't want to harm it but the front's looking a bit unkempt!

I cut my Laverta Fredrique back a little about 3 weeks ago as it was all over the path. it doesn't seem to have done it any damage.

Yep a trim wont bother it.
Not sure the californian lilac will be the same though.

Guess that's Ceonothus, and most flower on the previous years growth, so if you trimmed it recently, you just might have cut off most of next years flowers

        Thanks both. :)

Pete - yes, I'm not sure how the Ceonothus will react to being cut right back, it's the evergreen variety and I read beforehand that they don't really need pruning at all. Unfortunately it was attracting loads of flies and as it was right outside the kitchen window every time we opened it they kept coming in. :(
