Also - has anyone got any clever names for the deli?! I'm looking at a slightly more formal name with a rich feel about the business. Fortnum & Masons is unfortunately taken lol

Hi Loofah - finger crossed for the interview..
As for the name, it has to be appealing to the clientele that you are trying to attract.

Hopefully there is a lot of that sort of clientele around or, perhaps, you will create that demand, or, perhaps, nothing of the above. I really cannot help you in this quest because it is not an area of interest for me and I think one had to be passionate about it to come up with a nice name.

Need more information of what you intend to purvey

Fortnum and Masons signify quality food

A Deli signifies quality exotic foods/unusual foods

So for a good business name we need to know what you intend to sell

"Andy's Out of AFRICA" Pop down to AO's love and get some Biltong
"Med Delights" Pop down to Medi's and grab some olives, and that good bread he sells

Keep at it you will get there

Remember to check out any name you eventually pick. If it's already being used by someone else (particularly if it's in the same line of business) and if it's within a certain radius from your base you may not be able to use it.

This may be of some help:-

You have to be very aware of Intellectual Property Rights because you're trying to pick a catchy name and someone nearby may have already thought of it. Although I don't think anyone would have already picked 'Loofah's Deli' :snork:

You also have to be careful about what seems fairly simple. For instance: if your name was Mark and you were going into partnership with Steve you might think it OK to call your busines M & S - but you wouldn't get away with it. The big companies jump on you very quickly if they think you may be trying to cash in on their name.

Of course, you could turn it round and call yourselves S & M but that would only work well in one type of business. :heehee:

Thanks Jack, it's going to be a traditional delicatessen selling most of the things you would expect - charcuterie, cheese, chutneys, oils etc. Mostly Italian influenced but UK sourced. The presentation of both produce and store are to be of a high end nature.

:snork: I've thought of a few and checked against both a WHOIS lookup to make sure the domain would be available and companies house to make sure the business name is available.

Just be aware that it may not show up at Companies House. It could be a registered company but trading under a different name or may not be a Ltd company and not need to register.

    Ah, true...

Well in other news, I didn't get the job. I thought I was a good match and I certainly was on paper but there you go, sometimes it just doesn't fit.
    Moving on...

    UPDATE:
Progress has been made - that is to say the funding aspect hasn't worked out and so, for the time being at least, the shop won't be happening.

    IN OTHER NEWS!
I am committed to this venture and so will be started up online / mail order instead. I grant you this is not ideal as people like to see and taste the produce but any start is better than sitting about. Initially it will be home made small scale preserves, followed by other more deli-like offerings.
If anyone else is thinking of it, get on the phone to local enviro health bods and they'll take you through the very laborious process of hoop-jumping...

Move fast, travel light as I said in a previous career. I'll let you all know how things progress, albeit slowly!
