    Hi

my husband and I have recently moved and are keen to have a greenhouse in our new garden. There's an ideal plot for it in terms of access and protection from our energetic 18 month old son - only problem is that the spot we have in mind is in full shade from Oct onwards. In summer it does get direct light for a few hours of the day - although not in the morning

Being new to this we're in debate about whether or not to put a greenhouse here. My feeling is that if the spot is in shade from Oct it will prob not get any direct light until May time.....will this mean that we will struggle to grow anything?

please help as we're going round in circles discussing this and could do with someone who knows what they're talking about!!

    thanks

I can understand your dilemma. Access and son's safety versus optimimum growing conditions. Personally I'd go down the safety route - sons can't be replaced.
As far as your concerns about shade go, I wouldn't worry too much all that will happen is that your GH plants will be a bit behind what they would be if the GH was in full sun. And, from May onwards a bit of shade is an advantage - I've lost more plants from over-cooking than anything else.
You could always move the GH when son grows up or when the next 3 have grown up :D

Thanks Dave, we've been going round in circles with this one since we moved in 3 months ago! Was a bit concerened cos there's a post on here about a greenhouse being in full shade and the general consensus with that was that it would be a waste of time!
We'd like to grow peppers, a few tomatoes and maybe try melons or grapes.....do you think we'll manage those with a shaded greenhouse?

thanks again - new to all this so finding the forums an absolute god send!

Its always a compromise where to site your greenhouse. I've got a small greenhouse that is nearly always shaded apart from first thing in the morning. I can grow cucumbers just fine in there during the summer, and this time of year I've got it packed with lettuces, so you should do OK with yours in the safer position.

My other greenhouse gets the full sun and as Dave says this is a big problem, so during the summer I have to apply shading.

Certainly peppers and tomatoes, not sure about melons but worth a try. As for grapes you need quite a bit of space and the leaves will block out even more light.

slightly off of the subject i guess, but do you think its feasible to grow grapes through trellis? i'm not sure if we have the climate for it but a recent trip to staffordshire showed it must be possible as a local pub had grapes growing throughout their beer garden on both vertical and 'roof like' trellis.

Thanks Dave, i think i will! does anyone know of any particular varieties that would be suited to such a plan?

Also, i dont want to take the theme of this thread away from Yummy as i would also like to know of more personal experience regarding siting a greenhouse in say 70% shade
