How strange you should post this, Pete - only yesterday I was watching a programme by Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer) where he was dealing with dogs that had acute anxiety in reaction to loud noises like fireworks and gun fire.

But I so agree with you about restricting them. They should be for professional use only. Beats me how we have strick gun control and yet anyone can buy these. And what about that poor woman who was burned to death because some kinds on her estate (who had been harassing her) put a firework through her letter box.

I think it's high time they were withdrawn from public sale - high time.

When I grew up in Northern Ireland in the 70s and 80s they were banned for sale to the general public (for obvious reasons!) so we could only go to organised displays - result, no random letting off of fireworks by neighbours for two weeks before and after 5th November at all hours of the night. I'm in favour of banning them, not because they're dangerous, but because there are so many muppets out there who haven't the intelligence to handle these things with the respect they deserve...and end up being a public nuisance.

I found a couple of spent fireworks in the garden this morning from the chavvy neighbours who live behind us who wer having a "display" last night. I use the word display with heavy emphasis. A few random fireworks being shot into the sky seems a waste of money to me. Better off paying a fivver to go to the local park, etc and view a proper show.

They won't be banned because of prices and tax revenue. The bangers and screechers are the problems. But the other thing that needs public attention is the preparation of bonfires - always best to inspect the site before lighting to make sure no hedgehogs or small mammals have snuck under the twigs. Leave an alternative pile with some food to attract any hedgehogs and check the bonfire first.

    Good point Simon.

Most around here dont actually have a bonfire.
I guess a bonfire takes preparation, maybe a bit of work getting it all together.

Fireworks on the other hand only cost money, So there's no problem with them, just buy them and fire them.

It seems very strange to me, that I'm not allowed to ride a motor bike without a helmet or drive a car without a seat belt, neither of which affect anyone but myself.
But I can buy the biggest firework thats on sale, and set it off, 15ft from my neighbours window and thats OK.
This is a very crazy country these days.

BTW, its not just the red ones that I object to.
Just in case the new title to this thread is misleading.:)

Modern gardens are NOT the place to let off fireworks. Those pictured above have hit and dislodged tiles and dented cars in our little road by the new money estate they built behind us. Big rockets with 1"x1"x24" stakes !!!

They give my dog 2 weeks of hell, nothing you can do about it and thats before you get to the misuse of fireworks.

Tonight we went to a club firework display in a very large field on a farm, not one was inconvenienced and everyone had a great time, simples !:gnthb:

Someone nearby here is STILL letting them off. Grrrrr.

My boss has to give her dog the canine equivalent of valium for Bonfire Night, so she's another one that would like to see them banned!
