Yes they can eat your pansies. A tip is to water the pansies late in the day and it brings the slugs out of hiding. Then when it's dark take a torch and inspect your plants you may just find the slugs lurking. If pansies are planted in a pot look under the pot as they may also be hiding there.

    Cheers folks:dbgrtmb:

Was looking for a bit of slug proof bedding just to tart the place up. Put some Marigolds & Salvias in, they've all been eaten:sad:

I think Salvias are slugs' favourite plants (outside of the vegetable garden ) Zigs

Got some free salvias from Homebase earlier this year using a coupon in 'The Telegraph' one weekend but slugs grazed the whole tray down to stumps before I could use them.

:heehee: sorry, I know I shouldn't laugh but I could just "see" them troughing in the dark. "Hurry up chaps, he's put the bedroom light on - he'll be down (gromf) in a minute(gromf, gromf)."

Zigs, how about winter flowering cyclamen. Okay they're not as cheap as pansies and I'm not sure if they are slug proof, but I'm sure both of us will find out shortly! :)

Its a thought Sheal, what I could do is collect up a bucket of slugs & leave them under the bedding plant stand at the nursery, then select whats left in the morning:snork:

If you're looking for a winter bedding plant which doesn't get eaten by slugs you could try Primula or Polyanthus.

Cheers Trunky, didn't think of Primula's as I thought slugs would eat the leaves, them being edible by us and all.

I've got about 100 primroses growing in the greenhouse (the survivors from a batch of 200 my wife's granny gave us). The slugs have nibbled them but haven't devoured them.
