    :) Is there a case for a 99p coin?
So many things are £1.99 etc. and I see there are now 99p shops as well as pound shops.

Oh well it seemed a good idea at the time lol.

Well, I don't know about you, but my £1 coin isn't even worth 99p. :D

Its not quite as silly as it sounds - remember we used to have sovereingns coins (20 shillings) and guinea coins (21 shillings). I found out the reason for this the other day. In the early days, all sovereigns were made from gold. But not all gold was the same quality. Gold from the Guinea coast ( around Ghana) was higher quality, consequently Guinea sovereigns were worth a bit more. Later they formalised this into two different coins.

That's interesting, Peter, but not surprising. I worked for a diamond mine in Guinea, West Africa, and they produced the highest quality diamonds ever recorded (raw price per carat let alone when cut) .... following in the footsteps of the gold I guess. :)

I have always thought of you as a little gem Victoria! You must have led a very varied life. Perhaps all that practice with the pickaxe got you into digging and gardening. :D

I always thought the reason for 99p was to mislead the public into thinking the product was a bit cheaper than by making it a round number. But I gather that it started in the USA as a way to force the sales staff to use the till to get the change, and so to prevent them pocketing all the money. But I think it is just a con now.

    Caj .... :luv:

I agree with you Peter on your last comment, having lived in the States probably when this all started. However, I remember the reason actually being that $2.99 was FAR LESS in appearance than $3 so it 'enticed' a customer to purchase that item.
