I'm in need of some bright ideas ladies and gents - Saturday proved to be something of a disaster at work, with our diesel pump having failed overnight; once it was repaired on Saturday morning, I then set about fuelling vehicles in the hope that I could get them all done and hopefully none would run out whilst out in service.

Anyway, whilst in the process, it transpired that one of the vehicles had a faulty valve (we use high pressure delivery systems where the fuel supply hose is clipped onto the fuel tank, a bit like the F1 style) and the net result was that I got showered head to toe in copious amounts of diesel (damn shame, I'd much rather have had it in my cars tank than all over the ground!).

I have tried washing my jacket, jumper, jeans etc - even used two washing capsules - and yet they still stink of diesel.

I'm not overly fussed by the jeans or the jacket, but the jumper is one of my favourites comfy ones and wasn't cheap - is there anything I can do to get the smell out of these garments?

Try soaking the clothes overnight in a bucket with about half a pint of fabric conditioner and water....i've done similar FC when filling the car up and daydreaming....it took 2 washes for my jeans but worked:dbgrtmb:

When I worked as a mechanic my mom used to soak my clothes in an orange scented cleaner. Not sure what it was called, I will try and find out. But this worked.

Thanks loli - I'll need to get some fabric softener tomorrow and try that - we use the all in one capsules, so that may have hindered me on the last wash.

I also wonder how deep into the fabric the diesel got - this pump delivers at one hell of a rate, and I reckon that I got about ten litres for my troubles

I was going to suggest this as well, if the sweater is a favourite one might be worth giving it to the 'experts'!!

Good idea - if the conditioner trick fails, then hopefully Rusty will get the name of the orange stuff, failing that I will hunt for a dry cleaners

For five years I worked INSIDE the fuel tanks of Hercules aircraft! The smell of avtur was still present when I was nekkid! The R.A.F. laundry got the smell out of my clothing, but I was in Hong Kong for a few months before the smell finally left my pores.

        Cheers, Tony.

If it happened at work, and I'm not suggesting you go for compo, but can you not get work to pay to have the ruined clothes either professionally cleaned or replaced?

The trouble with diesel is, as I'm sure you know, it not only stinks, but it is a nightmare to get off anything.

Other than that, vinegar might do it. Diesel is just a light oil, and vinegar demolishes oil, so maybe worth a try?

Almost certainly - I could take it out of petty cash to be honest; I am off for a week, so my independent streak took over. In fairness, work have already ordered me a new pair of boots as they were saturated

According to mum any multi purpose orange cleaner in a bucket with hot water and a good gulf of white vinegar, soak for a few hours then in the machine with a good helping of liquid fabric conditioner. Apparently my Nan told her about it, she used it when Grandad worked on heavy goods vehicles

Thanks Rusty - I'll pop by Tesco tomorrow and get some conditioner (think I've got plenty Flash in the cupboard) and some white vinegar. I'll let you know how it works out :)

Hope your jumper can stand this "tough love" FC. You may need to go on a diet to get into it after,
